I noticed that The Schwarts hung his grenades by their ping-loops = not very smart!  😮 One little-accident-in-waiting.

 

ADDED:  Oh, I get it now!  He just grabs a grenade and it is ready to throw, no need to pull the pin with the ring.  Of course, he has to grab it very precisely or else throw it very quickly.  No "oopsies" allowed!

The pin is a safety pin which secures the mechanism.
When you pull it off, you can still hold the handle itself and it won't blow up prematurely 😄 
The timer basically starts once the pin is removed and handle is released after the throw.
Though quite unsafe thing to do either way if you move in dense bushes or so where the nade could be pulled off the belt by a mistake😄
