Yes, on older HDD's under 1gb, they could be disassembled and fixed without a clean room, but not anymore. The HDD wouldn't last long anyways after being disassembled in a regular household... maybe a few hours before you destroy the heads. In fact, if you as much as over-tighten a screw on the case (per secret proprietary standards to each HDD manufacturer), the drive will give you the click of death. No need to stretch the truth. If you paid 50 dollars for disk transfer software, you got ripped off mate. There's plenty of freeware out there that will work perfectly fine. Download CrystalDiskInfo and post the SMART info.
