Building a new gaming rig - any thoughts?

Ok first off I must point out this is a budget rig, I'm trying to get the most for my money and physically can't spend any more..  But want to make sure I'm not overlooking anything or making a silly decision?

Thank you :) But Ram is ram for me at this point.. I will pick up decent ram at half the price on an Ebuyer daily deal or similar when I can.. For now I've just gone for the cheapest 2x4gb I could get :)

Do you see any conflicts / issues with my selection? I am way out of touch with current tech so I've put this lot together on quick research

For PSU, the new CX line, the one with 5years of warranty. Corsair doesn´t list 2 versions anymore, so it´s safe to assume that cross referencing the product code on Corsairs site should lead you to the newer model- http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/corsair-cx650m-psu,4770.html#comment-list

Also AMD is back in business- http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-ryzen-5-1500x-cpu,5025.html

With AMD it´s REALLY important to check QVL list for RAM. And the BIOS for AM4 platform is raw yet.

Thanks for the tip - I will check it out!

But for the AMD side of things, I really can't cope with AMD. Even though I have nothing but trouble with AMD, I did look into Ryzen and to get the same user tested benchmarks on AMD parts I would actually end up paying more for AMD in this case. Never going to happen. I'm always happy to pay more for reliable Intel & nvidia and yet between the CPU, mobo and GPU I get more from Intel price wise

I will be dual booting Linux and Win 10

Currently every game I play runs fine for me on a I5-2xxx with a GTX 525M but it's a laptop and I'm sick of using a laptop.. After 10 years I'm finally building a desktop :P

It's for gaming and home office (web design & development)

I build one for my self few months ago:

CPU: G3258 ~80e

Board:asus Z97-P ~150e

mem: cruzial 1600 8mb ~70e

GBU. GTX970 (used 4month's old, warranty 2years) 180e

hd:samsung  850 evo M.2 250Gb 110e

Power was 600w (was same price and good manu as 450w)

case and power cost was high due my need for quiet system and water cooling for CPU.

runs Win 7 64bit

its 1150 socket (bit old) but my point was most bang on buck and compatibility.

Thanks mate I really appreciate the input!

I actually priced up about 5 options and thus one future proofs me a little so I decided I'd rather go for Max budget with longevity in mind than go lower than budget..

OK I am going to assume based on no-one saying otherwise, that I haven't overlooked any compatibility issues and will proceed with the purchases soon.

If anythings not compatible I'm blaming everyone on forums lol xD

hey chuckun,

if you want a recommendation, put your config into these two sites:

They are great to see benchmarks, compatibility, comparisons, prices etc.

Feedback about your config:

CPU:

If you can get your hands on a 6600k, go for it. it is 5$ more but it is 12% faster than the 7500 (link)

cuckun_cpu.jpg

GPU:

If you can push it up to the 1060 3GB or even 6GB you will have more balanced power with the CPU.

You will gain 69% (3GB) or 84% (6GB) more graphic power (link)

Memory:

I agree with you. Memory is a bit overrated because it is so fast, even the cheaper rams.

Usually the socket of the CPU dictates what main board you can use.

Then the main board dictates what memory takt you can buy.

SSD:

I dont see it in your config. One of the most important performance parts. Even the cheapest SSD is hundreds of times faster than a regular HDD

I usually recommend the samsung evo series. Reliable, well tested, fast, good prices.

http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Samsung-850-Evo-250GB/Rating/2977

PSU:

450 might be tight. As soon as you add mouse, keyboard, DVD/Bluray etc... Maybe find a 600watt. If you can go for the 80+ bonce or better.

https://pcpartpicker.com/products/power-supply/#W=600,875&t=2&e=2

Board:

Both intel CPUs have the socket LGA1151. This is important so the CPU fits :)

https://pcpartpicker.com/products/motherboard/#s=30&f=2

It looks you go ATX LGA1151 with the build. Important for board, CPU Cooler and PSU. This dictates if everything fits!

Thanks redy - very disappointed the 6600 still outweighs the 7500! I wonder if there is any hidden benefit to choosing the 7500 over the 6600?

I didn't really want to buy an outdated processor but that makes the 7500 seem pointless? Or perhaps there is more going on for the 7500 that benchmarks don't show. I will have to learn what the 7xxx has over the 6xxx

I cannot afford SSD or the GPU though sadly!

Edit: might stick to the 7500, the 6600 is way more expensive than $5 extra in the UK.. America is so lucky with tech prices! But part of me would rather have the latest anyway!

Edit2 - 450 PSU should be plenty TBH. I calculated I only needed about 350 safely so went for 450 extra safely lol

you got me all fired up :)

just did a config for myself. around 1000$ (no PSU, Monitor)

Bench: Game 97%, Desk 91%, Work 61%
CPU: Intel Core i5-7600K $240
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070 $334
SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 250GB $104
HDD: WD Blue 1TB (2015) $50
RAM: G.SKILL Trident Z DDR4 3000 C15 2x8GB $131
MBD: Asus H170-PRO $100
Total: $959

let me drill a bit more into the CPUs too. I was surprised about the lower takt of the 7500.

How much more is the 7600 in the UK? It is 9% faster compared to the 7500 and cost 9$ more

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-7600-vs-Intel-Core-i5-7500/3890vs3648

The 7600k kicks ass with 20% more performance but is about 40$ more

the good news is they are all LGA1151 so you can think about it without having to change the mainboard nor ram.

Basically the price of tech in UK vs US roughly cancels out exchange rate.. As a rule of thumb. So 1000 dollars = 1000 pounds unfortunately.

Realistically prices fluctuate here for certain models again for no reason at all.. But eventually it seems to work out the same as USD without exchange rate

I think I have probably got the best I am going to get for my budget! But I just double checked my PSU and your right there's a few things I forgot and my draw will be around 420W so I will go for a higher PSU - thanks for pointing it out!!
