As you all know, I've been an avid Radeon supporter for many years. I've bought nothing but Radeon GPUs over the course of the past nine years, and today that streak came to an end. It's not that their hardware isn't competitive. Nor has it been waiting for a decent architecture. I can live without HairWorks, ray tracing, and CUDA acceleration. Only 71 fps in ET? No problem. Microstuttering? I can live with it. Their drivers though. Oh man. What a steaming heap of ----. And that's why I'm parting ways with Radeon GPUs. And blue screens only paint a tiny fraction of the picture. For six months, I thought my GPU had failed. It had all the telltale signs of failure: black screens, artifacts, fans ramping up to 100% with a system hang, you name it. I used a backup card for many months until I absolutely needed my 480 for some work. I only needed it to work for 15 minutes. It's now been running for over a month without a problem. That's right, their drivers were so bad they mimicked hardware failure. (expensive hardware failure, at that) And yes, I threw the book at it (DDU, rolling back, flashing vbios, etc). Now I've been in the market to upgrade for some time. But I didn't really see any competition, and I wanted to continue to support AMD. So I waited. For the disaster that was Vega, and I waited for Navi. And seven months down the line, only half of the issues with Navi have been fixed. Now people are saying to wait for Navi 2. But this time, I'm finally fed up. I need something that just works. So I'm going back to Nvidia. Big whoop right? I make a long post just to say that? Well, no. Because I also can't recommend Radeon products any more, they've lost my trust. And if you're building a new PC, or considering an upgrade with a Radeon GPU, I just have two words: Good luck.

Heya ET players, I just wanted to alert you to an update for the AMD Catalyst driver that you should not install. As some of you know, with the technology for GPUs rapidly changing, support for our beloved aging games is starting to fade... in terms of our FPS rate. I got a rude awakening to that, after I updated the drivers for my AMD Radeon HD6570, hoping that it would fix a problem in another game (it didn't). From what I can gather (based on my own experience, and the AMD forums), AMD Catalyst version 13.9 is the last to support W:ET in all of it's glory. I updated from 13.4 to 13.12 and I could barely get about 20fps. Setting the r_primatives variable helped, but only boosted it to around 50fps. For the record, I'm used to 90-125fps (125fps being the maximum set in the cvar). I tried changing all of the MSAA settings, 3D settings, overclocking settings (who the hell would even need to overclock for ET? lol), etc. Nothing really helped. There might be something I'm missing out here (please say so, if I am missing something huge), but for now watch those driver updates.

Pricing of AMD Radeon HD 7700, 7800 Graphics Cards Keeps Dropping Advanced Micro Devices on Thursday informed about reduced prices of its mainstream and performance-mainstream graphics cards. The company and its partners continue to lower pricing in a bid to better compete against Nvidia Corp.'s growing lineup of Kepler-architecture GeForce 600-series graphics cards. Starting today, AMD Radeon HD 7850 1GB costs $159 (after rebate), whereas the 2GB version carries $189 official price-tag. The AMD Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition graphics board now has manufacturer suggested retail price of $119. AMD and its partners specifically reduced price of sub-$200 graphics boards to improve positions in the most popular segment of graphics boards.
