American Airlines says it is still investigating the cause of the glitch The glitch caused iPad software - used by the planes' pilots and co-pilots for viewing flight plans - to stop working. The firm's cockpits went "paperless" in 2013 to save its staff having to lug heavy paperwork on board. AA estimated the move would save it more than $1.2m (£793,600) in fuel every year. The company said that it had now found a fix for the problem. "We experienced technical issues with an application installed on some pilot iPads," said a spokesman. "This issue was with the third-party application, not the iPad, and caused some departure delays last night and this morning. "Our pilots have been able to address the issue by downloading the application again at the gate prior to take-off and, as a back-up, are able to rely on paper charts they can obtain at the airport. "We apologise for the inconvenience to our customers." American Airlines pilots use an app called FliteDeck, which is made by the Boeing subsidiary Jeppesen. A spokesman for the firm provided further detail. American Airlines said its pilots often carried more than 35lb (16kg) of paperwork "The issue was caused by a duplicate chart for Reagan National Airport in American's chart database," said Mike Pound. "The app could not reconcile the duplicate, causing it to shut down. "We were able to remedy the situation quickly, and instruct pilots to uninstall and reinstall the app. "Until the chart database is updated, AA pilots flying to or from National will use PDF [portable document format] images of the chart, outside of the app." Electronic flight bags Serge Gojkovich, chief executive of car parking app-maker Curbstand, was among the passengers affected. He tweeted that his San Francisco-to-Los Angeles flight only got airborne on Tuesday after its pilots told passengers they had printed off the maps they needed. Mr Gojkovich suggested that the pilots of his flight printed out the materials they needed American Airlines is not the only carrier whose pilots and cabin crew have switched from using physical charts and paper manuals to tablets. United Airlines was also an early adopter of iPads, while Delta has opted for Microsoft's Surface tablets instead. British Airways and Ryanair are among others still in the process of shifting to so-called Electronic Flight Bag-based systems. In addition to saving on fuel costs, it is also suggested that such kit reduces flight preparation time, reduces the likelihood of injuries and helps staff by offering real-time updates. Apple Inc is preparing to roll out a larger, 12.9-inch version of its iPad for 2015, with production set to begin in the first quarter of next year, Bloomberg cited people with knowledge of the matter as saying on Tuesday. The report comes as Apple struggles with declining sales of its 10-inch and 7.9-inch tablets, which are faltering as people replace iPads less frequently than expected and larger smartphones made by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and other rivals encroach upon sales. Apple has been working with its suppliers for over a year on larger touch-screen devices, Bloomberg cited the sources as saying. It is expected to introduce larger versions of its 4-inch iPhone next month, although the company has not publicized plans for its most important device. Hey everyone, I have on my lap a customer's iPad... which needs a factory reset. I know this takes about 4 hours or so, so I have it plugged in. The problem is, regardless of whether it's plugged into my computer,an HP Touchpad power adapter (5.3v, 2a), or a Samsung cell phone charger (5.3v, 1a)- it says "Not Charging" in the upper right hand corner. Since my client just got this iPad and can return it, should she do so with the reason that the battery won't charge- or am I missing something here? Thanks!

Crooks steal $1.5M in iPads from JFK It beats waiting in line at an Apple Store. A pair of brazen crooks punched another hole in the lax JFK security when they stole a trove of new Apple iPad minis — worth $1.5 million — from the same cargo building that was the site of the 1978 Lufthansa heist featured in “GoodFellas,” The Post has learned. The crooks struck shortly before midnight on Monday and used one of the airport’s own forklifts to load two pallets of the tablet computers into a truck, according to law-enforcement sources. They might have gotten more, but the thieves drove off leaving three more pallets of the Apple tablets behind after they were challenged by an airport worker returning from dinner. “So, as a caper goes, it was probably unsuccessful,” a source said. The thieves were still at large last night. Investigators, suspecting an inside job, have been questioning airport workers and given three of them polygraph tests, the sources said. The crooks arrived at Building 261 around 11 p.m. in a white tractor trailer marked with the name CEVA on the side, according to the sources. They pulled up to the side of the airport building that faces onto a street and has less security than the other side, which is accessible from the airport tarmac. Sources believe someone let them into the area and then let them out after they grabbed the iPads. They grabbed about 3,600 of the minis that were being shipped by a company called Cargo Airport Services, which said the iPads had just arrived from China and were destined for locations around the US. A group of crooks stole $5 million in cash and nearly $900,000 worth of jewelry from the same building at JFK on Dec. 11, 1978. That haul would be some $21 million if adjusted for inflation and has been ranked as America’s largest robbery of cash ever. The alleged mastermind of the robbery was Luchese crime-family associate James “Jimmy the Gent” Burke. He allegedly got away with the crime after whacking nearly all of his co-conspirators in the heist — a legendary gangland bloodbath that was recounted in one of the most famous sequences of the Martin Scorsese film “GoodFellas.” source

Apple Must Publish Notice Samsung Didn’t Copy IPad in U.K. Apple Inc. (AAPL) was ordered by a judge to publish a notice on its U.K. website and in British newspapers alerting people to a ruling that Samsung Electronics Co. didn’t copy designs for the iPad. The notice should outline the July 9 London court decision that Samsung’s Galaxy tablets don’t infringe Apple’s registered designs, Judge Colin Birss said today. It should be posted on Apple’s U.K. home page for six months and published in several newspapers and magazines to correct any impression the South Korea-based company was copying Apple’s product, Birss said. The order means Apple will have to publish “an advertisement” for Samsung, Richard Hacon, a lawyer for Cupertino, California-based Apple, told the court. “No company likes to refer to a rival on its website.” Apple is fighting patent lawsuits around the globe against competitors including Google Inc., HTC Corp. (2498) and Samsung as it competes for dominance of the smartphone and tablet computer markets. The firms have accused each other of copying designs and technology in their mobile devices. Legal battles about the similarity of Samsung and Apple tablets are being fought in Germany, the Netherlands and the U.S. Public Statements Birss said in his July 9 ruling that Samsung’s tablets were unlikely to be confused with the iPad because they are “not as cool.” He declined today to grant Samsung’s bid for an injunction blocking Apple from making public statements that the Galaxy infringed its design rights. “They are entitled to their opinion,” he said Apple spokesman Alan Hely didn’t immediately respond to a phone call and e-mail requesting comment on the judge’s order. “Should Apple continue to make excessive legal claims based on such generic designs, innovation in the industry could be harmed and consumer choice unduly limited,” Samsung said in a statement after the hearing. “The war between these two companies seems to be escalating even further,” said Colin Fowler, an intellectual property lawyer at London-based Rouse. He said much of the publicity around the July 9 ruling focused on Birss’ comments about Samsung not being as cool. “From a victory in court they were suddenly on the back foot,” Fowler said in a phone interview. “Getting this order fits in with the context of them trying to restore the balance.” ‘Commercial Harm’ Comments made by Apple after that ruling unfairly implied that Samsung had copied designs, Samsung’s lawyer Kathryn Pickard said at the hearing. That “caused real commercial harm.” As well as Apple’s website, the company must pay for notices in the Financial Times, the Daily Mail, Guardian Mobile magazine, and T3, according to a draft copy of the order provided by Samsung’s lawyers. Apple faces ban on iPhone and iPad sales A German court has issued an injunction that temporarily bans Apple Inc. from selling or marketing its mobile devices such as iPhones and iPads in Germany. But it’s unclear whether it will have an immediate effect on the company. In a statement to the tech blog theverge.com, Apple said that the ruling, issued on Friday by a court in Mannheim, was simply a “procedural issue,” that “does not affect our ability to sell products or do business in Germany at this time.” The court made the default decision after Apple did not attempt to debunk Motorola's patent infringement claims. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment by The Local and Apple’s internet store in Germany was still selling its products on Monday. The ruling stems from a long-running patent dispute between Apple and Motorola over mobile technology. Apple has been aggressively defending its technology, even succeeding in having some competing Android devices temporarily banned in Germany earlier this year. Motorola is currently in the process of being purchased by Google, which makes the Android operating system. But a ban in Germany, which is Europe’s biggest electronics market, could be devastating for the company, especially if it is accused of violating the ruling which could result in fines of €250,000 per violation. It is not yet clear, however, whether the ruling applies directly to Apple Germany, which is a subsidiary of Apple Inc., and commentators were offering different viewpoints on its effect Monday. Nilay Patel of theverge.com called it a “totally symbolic victory for Motorola” because the ruling doesn’t mention Apple Germany. But intellectual property analyst Florian Mueller wrote on his blog FOSS Patents that the real question is whether the parent company would legally be able to provide product to its subsidiary. If deliveries are blocked, it could make it impossible for devices to be sold in Germany in any event. The law firm Scherer & Körbes wrote on its blog that under the terms of the ruling supplies could “probably be prohibited.” But Apple remains free to appeal to ruling. Source DJ
