Had this problem with a usb midi interface once where it would immediately turn off and say unrecognized on any port. Through the device manager, under USB Controllers. Go to properties for each of the USB Root Hub entries, go to power management, and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Also make sure the usb ports and casing don't wiggle around when you touch them. Could indicate a broken solder connection. Any kind of electrical short can cause an unrecognized error.
