You might as well upgrades mines and pumps as you go, as they just produce more per TH level. What I wouldn't do is upgrade you TH level just to get new pumps and mines levels. I wouldn't upgrade your TH until everything is completely maxed. Don't rush anything, and bide your time with things. 

I agree, it is simply free loot every day. Same with DE Pumps. Raids will be your primary income, but free loot is free loot.

The best defense is to not to keep your storages filled up and having a farming base with TH in the corner unprotected. 98% percent of the time (speaking from my experience so far below 2000 cup trophy level) mostly i get TH snipers attacking me and leaving.
