Right now, for that kind of money ... the AMD R9 280X, AMD R9 290 and the AMD R9 290X gpu's are hard to beat.

Most Computer and Gaming mag's will tell you at their current price points (AMD just cut prices for Mid-high to High end cards like this), the AMD cards will out perform similar priced nVidia offerings.

Although the 290x cards have ticked up slightly again from their $300 lows in January and February due to higher demand again, and dwindling supplies, as AMD's new 300x series cards are about to also be released before long.

Best PCI Express (PCIe) Card For ~$240:

An updated version of AMD's previous-generation Radeon HD 7970 with a higher core clock rate and notably more memory bandwidth, and now that the 280X can be found at $240, though, it offers the best sub-$300 graphics card performance that money can buy.

Best high end video cards: Best Video Card For less than $300:

Radeon R9 290X 4GB:
From a performance point of view, the R9 290X trade blows with the Geforce GTX 970. At very high resolution (2K), the R9 290X pulls ahead. At 2560 x 1440, they trade blows. At only 1080p, the Geforce GTX 970 pulls ahead.
That said, the R9 290X is quite a bit less expensive, at $300 vs $330-340 for the GTX 970. This makes the R9 290X a compelling option for $300. This card will run any game at 1920 x 1200 (or 1080 for 1080p) maxed out,
as well as most games at 2560 x 1600 without any problem. Gaming with a 4K resolution or on multiple monitors is also possible, although you might have to turn settings down, depending on the game.

Ain't nobody got time for AMD ;)

I´ve got Sapphire r9 290 Tri-x OC, its quiet(don´t hear over case fans), its cool and can tick Ultra in any game in HD;) For ~300$ its best choise. I wouldn´t recommend 290X though, for 5FPS more you´d have to deal with lots of more heat\temps and noise, not worth it for more money in my eyes. r9 290 or next would be GTX970...

Gigabytes r9 290 Windforce should be quiet and cool also, other versions are no go.

I'm really looking at the GTX970 right now 350 all review says best for the buck.  Just hope the new puter has the right power plugs?

Well THAT all depends on Your PSU ( Power Supply ) ... what do you have ?

Don't be an nVidia Fan boy :censored  ... the AMD cards are great for the $$, that R9 290 for $245 is hard to beat for the $ ... but Butters, yeah the nVidia GTX 970 cards are great too, although I know someone (CruelKind) that has nothing but problems with his eVGA GTX970, has had to RMA it and STILL Can't play COD4 with it for whatever reason. So again ... no one should be a fan boy of nVidia OR AMD ... they both make GOOD cards and sometimes crap cards.  :cheers

Not necessarily, even if his computer doesn't come with the nifty plugs to go right into the GFX the card should come with the molex to nifty plug connector.

Sorry, brain farts and can't thing of the name of the nifty plug for the GFX card :P

I would NOT use those MOLEX adapters on a $300 GPU ... also if his PSU unit is THAT OLD or LOW GRADE QUALITY that you'd need to use them ... he should consider an upgrade/update to his power supply, and also it may not have enough juice to power his new Graphics card, I'd hope he would have at LEAST a 500W 80+Gold rated PSU  ;)  and a 750 watt unit would be better if he ever wants to SLI in the future.

I've got a 1000 Watt 80+ PLATINUM power supply for my R9 290x's  :D  ok just 1 right now, either want to upgrade to the R9 295x or look at the new R9 390x's when then come out soon.

Do I recommend molex adapters? Nah. But Nvidia does provide them with the card hahaha. I WILL be a Nvidia fan boy so you shush it! I only have a 620W 80+Gold Rated psu :P Shit with the 970 pretty sure it uses less power then my card. And hes not running many more accesories. Although his post doesn't say he bought a new PSU wiht his PC, I'm going to imagine that he did.

Hopefully that is.
