Popular Post ajnl Posted June 5, 2014 Popular Post Posted June 5, 2014 (edited) I'm pretty sure I've mentioned before on the forums and some friends on here that I grew up in Haiti. My parents were missionaries for 29 years there. Both my parents are Dutch and I was born in the Netherlands, but only because of some complications my mom had during the pregnancy. So I lived in Haiti for 18 years and once I graduated from High School I moved to the Netherlands for college. Haiti has been in and out of the news a lot (especially the last 4-5 years). Usually having to do with the Earthquake, disease out breaks, poverty, or corruption problems. Which is all true, Haiti is extremely poor and the government is very corrupt. However, in an effort to show the good sides of Haiti, I wanted to post some pictures. Haiti has beautiful mountains and gorgeous beaches. The people there are very hospitable. People will invite you over for dinner, even though they have barely enough for their own family. The art there resembles African art, which makes sense since many people were brought to Haiti as slaves, by the French. Haiti shares an island with the Dominican republic (Haiti has about 1/3, the D.R. has about 2/3). Haiti was a colony of France until the slaves revolted against their French "owners" and gained independence in 1804. Open the spoiler to see the pictures There is always room for one more person! Anyways, I just wanted to show a side of Haiti that the news generally doesn't show. Honestly, it is a great place to go on vacation. You just need to have someone there who can show you around. Kaliente Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Wow those are some cool pics man! We always have to defend Haiti, because at @ RCCL we go there, place is really a gem. It's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be, I don't understand the fear for the place. It's much like any other area in the Caribbean, it's had it's problems but the locals are great. Every Haitian I've spoke to has been so gracious and humble, even though most have so little they are great people. Love the pics again! What made me laugh is the people going out for fishing on their little shanty rafts. Sad and funny at the same time. Quote
