Ol Smoke Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 Okay, stay with me now this gets interesting. After installing and updating WIN7 (W7) on a clean drive, I started to install some programs. The first thing I tried was my new MS OFFICE SBE 2003 which I got from Ebay. It would not load. The DVD would just sit and grind and grind. I tried everything. Then I remembered a trick we did to some programs that didn't want to be installed in XP. We copied the whole disc to a HDD folder and then told the setup.exe to run from a 98se window, and it would work. So I did that with this office program. Once I had it copied to the harddrive, I told the install file to run as a WINXPSP3 install. It worked! I did that to all my old programs I love to use and some old 98/xp games that I still play. They all worked. The only program that will not work under any condition is Adobe Photoshop 5. boo hoo hoo I loved that version. There were some things that did not work properly until I jerry rigged them with some info from the net. My HP LaserJet 1200 and the Epson R200 disk printer. They work okay and will print as needed, but I do have to do some manual things with the R200 that was automatic before, before I can print onto a CD. My Epson 1240u scanner would not work at all so I bought one from Amazon for $73 which is the updated version of the 1240u. I even got free 2 day shipping on FedEx and Saturday delivery. whoo hoo My main DVD-RW is a Plextor PX-820-A and it is an old non SATA drive. It is a flawless recorder and I will use it still but I am going to get a SATA Plextor in the neat future. Plextor is the ONLY DVD writer that doesn't slow down when recording. All the others have a built in software to slow the data stream and the spin speed when it feels like it. But not the Plextor drives. You want to burn a dvd at 8x, that is what it will do. So then I came down to installing COD4. I did the same thing, and got all the patches and it installed flawlessly. But then crash! Every time I tried to play the MP game I got an error about the iw3mp.exe file was bad or something. So I searched the internet for that error and found out it was the sound card and the speakers screwing it up. So here is what I did. I unplugged the speakers, installed my USB Logitech headset, and bingo-bango-bongo I was playing COD4 again. Isn't that the weirdest thing? Thank god for the internet. Once I knew it was playing correctly, I inserted my old settings profile and I was back on the FA beginners. One thing I noticed right off in the game was my ping is better. I ran 115ms most of the time, but now I am at 94ms. My shots are cleaner and there is no lag anymore in the time when I press the shoot button and when the gun actually fires. The screen is more clear and it is actually 16x9 now, with a true circular scope instead of a oval shaped one. One thing that I saw immediately that was so much better than before was the internet speed. Now this is what I was paying for all those months. I decided to go with LiveMail because it accepted all my stuff from Outlook Express. It is a very nice email program. The last thing I got to do is speed up the HDD system. I am doing the firmware upgrade tonight. I can't remember what it said I will get afterwards but it was like 10 to 20% better speed thru the bus. Then I am going to see about clocking my RAM up. The auto system wants 800 but the RAM is certified at 1024 so I am going to see if it will stabilize at the higher speed, it will probably start a fire and blow up and kill me. All in all, I am very pleased with the WIN7 PRO 64bit, and I want to thank all of you who helped me decide what to get. Thanks. XOXOXO Smoke Quote
