Need some help with the WinMTR reports, not really sure how to interpret them.

Basically my internet connection keeps getting worse since about a year. My ISP got bought up by another one some time ago, before that all was fine (Arcor -> Vodafone). Played on Jay2 couple of times the last days and every 10-15 minutes I get a connection interrupt, the game has a complete freeze then, can't move or receive any updates from the server, lagometer all yellow. After waiting one or two minutes it continues as if nothing happened. This happens on no other server (US or EU). Though I keep getting yellow spikes on all servers since quite a while, sometimes more sometimes less but always present.

Changing net-settings in ET makes no difference, TCP/IP settings like MTU on my PC and router are fine as far I can google, also tried some things but no change in any way, so I think the problem is on ISP side but want to be really sure.

Here WinMTR reports of Jay2/3, actually the one of Jay3 seems worse but I don't get the connection interrupts only yellow spikes. Bandwidth is usually fine, pings are fairly stable but it can happen that I have 45 today, 80 tomorrow, 60 the day after. That wouldn't bother me that much but obviously there is some packet loss on the way, but how can it happen that packets in between are dropped but the target server shows all reveived? :hmm

Run the one for jay3 for 1000 packets... That stupid data-center requires 1000 packets... I will pass on the report to their network team.

Also does it started today on jay2? or before also? Does it happens to other players at same time or just to you?

Posted (edited)

Wasn't playing on Jay2 for a while except the last 3 or 4 days, since then I have the issue. Never had it that bad earlier except a short lagspike here and there. Tbh I didn't ask other players but no one complained about lags or see someone going 999, so I guess it's just me (could be wrong, can check demos if the map has continued).

Here you go (Jay3), they get 40 extra packets!

Weird enough, but what could cause this?

Strange that at 1st hop you have such high values. pity that winmtr has no standard deviation like Linux mtr, so it' hard to tell how often that 'worst' value actually happens(?)

Is there a way for you to telnet to your modem, and issue a ping command straight from there (to bypass your operating system)?

Probably a network glitch? or some switch configuration? I know some network devices are configured so that ICMP replies are their least priority... To be honest, I have zero idea.. Just a wild guess. Out host data center requires packet loss at both side winMTR.

Let me try to run MTR from another machine in same data-center.. see if that catches anything.

Hmm seems not, as far a quick google search could offer. I can ping in the webinterface but it only pings 4 times and not continuous, but they are same as Windows shows. Currently connected through W-Lan, a bit fluctuating between -58/-62 dBm.

Also ran WinMTR on other servers and different hosters, some little packetloss on some routes but everything that involves 'core1.hetzner.de' and 'core22.hetzner.de' looks horrible

try with ping -t IP to ping continuous.... instead of just 4 times.  Here is from another machine.... That's also zero packet loss. On 15th Sept I know data-center is going under maintenance...Probably that's the case?

Yes I can do that in the Windows command line, but not my router's webinterface. There's just an address field + button, no more options to set.

This is what Windows shows, also no packet loss!?

And every server/website I could find in a hurry and the routing involves 'core1.hetzner.de' or 'core22.hetzner.de' shows the same.

Here most obvious one, www.hetzner.de:

I only notice that my connection gets worse every month, in all games and it's not a placebo :P might be just a coincidence that I now started using WinMTR and noticed the problem at hetzner servers...Also I don't know if it's a general problem and I am unlucky with the servers I play on, or if it's only related to my ISP somehow.

Posted

Did some more testing, thought I would run a WinMTR at night when general internet traffic is lower.

This is Jay3 at about 2:30 AM german time, not a single packet was dropped:

Also played some hours at Jay1 today, was all pretty smooth and free of lag. As more players connected (30+) it got noticably worse up to the point where other player models are literally a slideshow. There is also some packetloss on the way in WinMTR:

Except the fact that I don't like to play ET with 30 or more people at once, it's meanwhile technically not even possible anymore, but as said I'm no network specialist and how the ISPs and hoster share their routers or webservers or what belongs to whom exactly...I would like to hear more opinions from some network pros about these reports :)

Yet another update...Played a bit on Jay1 again, was all good even with many players for a few maps. Then crap started again and my lagometer looks like this, though the red spikes are not always present and that horrible, the yellow ones are more or less always present, starting slowly and getting worse the more players are on the server. At least that's the only obvious reference, dunno if really related to each other...

post-11075-0-14045900-1379081249.jpg

as I said before changing net related settings to any value changes nothing (rate, cl_maxpackets, cl_packetdup)

Right after disconnecting I started WinMTR:

That many red is not good... Can u try to play on stopwatch server and see how it goes? Run winMTR on it.

Jay1 is hosted at gameservers.. Sended a ticket to them for packet loss.

Can't even connect to sw server, stuck at "awaiting gamestate" screen...(silent1/hc work fine, so my local game should be ok thus far)

Problem on Jay2 is still present, getting full packet loss every ~10 minutes. Lasts about 5-10 minutes and then I can reconnect. Started WinMTR right after lagometer went full yellow in the upper line.
