Ol Smoke Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I was five years old and we were moving from Washington state to Arkansas. We had a 1950 Ford and was pulling a trailer. We were somewhere in New Mexico, on Route 66, when this happened. I was sleeping in the back window area, and my brother and sister were in the back seat. Dad was driving and my mom was in the front passenger's side of the car. All I can remember about the accident are these small visions. I remember feeling a huge bump or something behind me and then seeing the roof moving, seeing my brother moving and then landing real hard on something. The next thing I remember is seeing my mom's face looking down at me, and she had this look of sheer terror. Then the next thing, she is trying to lift me up, and I am trying to move. The whole time, my dad is trying to control our car as it careens around and around. Then, everything stops. My mom, tells me to stop moving and then she looks around and asks my brother and sister if they are okay. They are both crying, my mom is crying, my dad is cursing and yelling, and I am just confused, and there is dirt and dust everywhere. So here is what happened. We are traveling down the road at about 50 mph when a guy driving a 1955 Cadillac falls asleep at about 75 mph. He hits the back of the trailer sending the tongue into the back section of the car. This is why I was launched into the front seat. This didn't wake the caddy driver up, no, he has he foot on the gas still and is pushing us off the highway. My dad is doing his best trying to steer and control this mess. Then the driver wakes up and hits the brakes, giving my dad the ability to control our car. So, I was knocked out of the shelf area where the back window is, flew along the roof, going over the front seats, and landing in the floor by my mom's feet. My brother and sister wound up in the floor of the rear seat area. Now. Not only were we all in the car, but we had a parakeet, cat and a puppy in there also. Now they are all loose and running and flying all over the car, so we are rolling up windows as fast as we can. We soon get them all back into cages and boxes. Then we realize we are in a wrecked car, in 110 degree heat, with the windows up, and the gas tank is ruptured, and my dad still has his cigarette in his mouth...burning. The only problem with this is...it's a two door car, and we are all trying to get out at the same time. Which we did, and everyone was okay. The car was destroyed. So we spent the next week in that town, waiting for the insurance companies to get together and write us a check for the damages. We bought a used 1955 Ford Fairlane with a 312 V8. We were kinda excited about the new car. My sister got to pick out a stuffed animal for our present for the new car. She got a three foot tall black and white Panda bear. We got a new trailer from a local Nationwide dealer, and he had people from his church come and help us re-load it. We then continued our trek to Arkansas. There is more to this story. The Ford Fairlane and the Panda bear are due for more excitement. See my next story for more excitement. 3 Quote
