These eruptions fly up to 250 miles above the surface of the moon. Because of the gravitation pull of Jupiter and two of its other moons, Los gets flexed and relaxed constantly. This in turn heats up the moon. This heat and pressure is what creates the volcanic eruptions.

It's pretty amazing to realize that such violent volcanic activity exists so far from the sun with gravity as the catalyst.... Jupiter is one badass planet... !
