I do this in the library occasionally.  I did it several times at Costco.

The old wallpaper over the desktop trick.

First, take a screen print of the desktop.

Save it to anywhere.

Set the desktop to not show icons.

Set the wallpaper to the screen print you just made.

It looks just like the desktop now.

People come up and mouse click on it and nothing happens.

Funny.  Us old guys like stuff like this.  Half of you guys would fall for this old trick.

I can here it now....click ..click.. WTF!

yeah, but well..

Using the mouse is overrated, only use of that thing is aiming in videogames ^^

and my computers are always locked when I'm not at them (we do enough crap during class to know I have to lock it when leaving it unattended for a while)

Additional stuff:

- Make the taskbar invisible and dock it to the left (or right)

- If it contains a default intel graphics and drivers are installed, rotate the image 180 degrees, take that as screenshot and press ctrl+alt+"down" (latter is always fun btw :P)

Also I wouldn't fall in your setup, I don't have desktop icons :P
