With 8 GB of ram and windows 7 64 bit, my boot time is 1 minute from pressing the power button to getting to the desktop (including choosing os and entering password), and then 1 minute 5 seconds to load explorer. But I have norton, comodo and spybot.

I would go only SSD drives now on and keep spinning ones only storage and Back up reasons. SSD makes even older laptop run dam decent speed (I test installed my son IBM Thinkpad T61).

P.S I even have Quantum Bigfoot running as backup storage in one my own network pc :)
