Fallout 3 is pretty good. It's basically Oblivion in the future. Unfortunately, the only thing to really do is follow the storyline. Sure there are sidequests, but really, the only exciting part is the storyline.

... mmm OK i have put in over 90 hours into the game but i haven't done any more than the first 3 steps of the main storyline... if you play this game and don't find anything to do other than the main storyline, your A button must be broken or you haven't taken the time to look behind you because the game is played on a huge map full of cities and people who have nothing at all to do with the main quest. you could probably run through the storyline in 15-20 hours, but like i said i have over 90 into it and haven't played more than 2 hours of 'main story' and i haven't exactly been standing still. what's exciting is up to you - there aer alot of mundane thigns about rpg's that i kind of enjoy; just managing inventory and building alliances with people is kinda fun for me, and you can spend alot of time doing that sort of thing.

so i have to disagree with that. i get the feeling i could spend 200 hours on fallout without ever "beating the game" by completing the main storyline.

it's not at all a 1st person shooter. the game is not all about killing enemies - there is a lot more to it. the combat is good - for an rpg - but bad compared to COD or FEAR or something like that. it's fun, but it's not the fun you should expect from playing halo.

it's an rpg, so you 'level up your character' and i am going to be maxed out soon -- so i will end up playing th bulk of the main story as a complete badass. this should make the main storyline quests pretty easy, but it doesn't mean the game is easy. it's hard to call it either way.. it's a very open-ended environment where i have a ton of choices ( with lasting effects ), one of which is to just play without any clear objective.

it is pretty much oblivion with guns -- but that is a good thing. it has some of the same glitches and cheesy effects oblivion had, but overall, given the scale of the game, the grand scope and the way your choices CRITICALLY effect the game, i will have to play the game through 3-4 times to see everything there is to see -- taking like half a year to do it. it's a heck of a deal for $60 -- definitely one of the best games i've played and even though i am big cheapskate, i'm not sorry for the $60 it cost and don't think there is any other new game out that would give you as much "bang for the buck" except maybe fable II but fable is a cheesy zelda rip-off anyway so who wants to waste a month on that? i love zelda, but you know, in the end saints row just isn't GTA and it never will be. why eat powdered cheese substitute when you can have the real thing?

it's not a game for kids. some terrible, nightmarish things go down, there's bad language everywhere and you have the freedom to be very very evil. still, there's not the softcore porn like in GTA IV and you're not so encouraged to behave badly as you are just allowed to ( but you are rewarded, in a way.. ), so if you are sure t3h kids know what is good and bad in real life i would feel better about them playing this than GTA -- but even with confidence in your kids moral compass the game raises deep questions about behavior and you would want to be aware of what they are doing and be around to talk about choices they make.

what can i say Fallout 3 rocks and i'm no where near done with it.

Great game, great concept. Worth the game of the year.

If you like shooting games/ rpgs, must have.

It is very well done. I remember the feeling the first time I left the vault to explore the wasteland, and just looking at it and thinking, "Holy crap." It really brings the feeling of post-apocalypse into the game. However, I also didn't feel there was a lot to do outside the main quest. Unlike Oblivion, there are no organizations (such as the guilds) to easily set you up with a series of quests, so each one must be found on its own. I also can't find a whole lot of variety in character building, as I don't think many builds different from what I used would be fun or effective, especially during the early game.

well if u played through the main stuff in the game. the game felt really, really short. only in my opinion though.

I like the Elder Scrolls series better personally, but I think they're more open ended than the Fallout games. However, the stories aren't quite as good. I'm playing on PC with a few user created mods (there's one that adds more songs to GNR which is AWESOME, also I suggest DarnifiedUI [also good in Oblivion]). Bethesda makes great games and I can't wait to see what they come up with now that id is under the same roof.
