They are not smoked, they are evaporated. Therefore, some consider the electronic cigarette for health rather harmless. The E-Cigarette is booming, but eyed by experts and more critical. The mini battery and electrical equipment from a liquid mixture is vaporized nebulizer and inhaled. It will not burn tobacco, no tar was added. How risky is the e-cigarette, what exactly is in the so-called liquids, which threaten to damage and side effects is still largely unexplored. The warnings, however, be insistent. First states have banned the product.

"Consumers can be confident that a product is not harmful to health - and that's when the e-cigarette may in any way," says Martina Poetschke-Langer from the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). "You should at this new product that pushes so heavily on the market, learn from the mistakes of the past," the expert warned overlooking the conventional cigarettes. "The normal cigarette in the last century has caused millions of deaths and would never have been available if we had had today's knowledge a century ago."

Business is booming

The legal situation regarding e-cigarettes in Germany is unclear. In Bavaria, the trade of nicotine-containing cigarettes, according to e-DKFZ has been prohibited since the introduction several years ago. In December 2011, North Rhine-Westphalia said it was illegal. Beginning of January 2012 was followed by Bremen, white-Pötschke Langer. "Because something could get going. The countries are concerned about how they move forward together." Consumer protection only works everywhere. As long as you can stock up legally in other states and order over the Internet without any problems, continue to boom the business.

But: "What is currently on the market, everything is not permitted and inspected," warned Health Minister Barbara Steffens NRW. The liquid substances of the Green Party politician, according to such high amounts of nicotine that they are classified as drugs - and are thus approved by the strict requirements of the Medicines Act would need. Liquids are available but not all. Ergo trading and sales are in North Rhine-Westphalia as unlawful.

Unaudited and are not allowed

There are many question marks in the mixtures. They contain varying amounts of nicotine - a nerve poison and drugs. Some are nicotine-free, contain flavors such as chocolate-caramel or licorice. "Is not in the e-cigarette the whole mess in there, but it is not healthy, but less harmful," says Alexandra Funck. The 42-year-old wants it from the conventional cigarette away. And: "It leaves no butts, no ash, the clothes do not stink and they harassed his fellow man is not.". The prohibition does not understand the Diisseldorf. "Then you would have to ban cigarettes, the normal or only sell to pharmacies."

The manufacturers go from 1.2 million consumers in this country. Red Kiwi leader advertises in Hamburg: "The E-Cigarette is by far less harmful alternative to tobacco cigarette in comparison." The doctors doubted. Pulmonary Specialists warn of harmful effects on the respiratory system. A study of 30 smokers showed that after five minutes of striking inhaler frequently the airways were narrowed, as the German Society for Pneumology explains. Responsible is propylene glycol. The vapor consists of 90 percent propylene glycol, which is used industrially as an antifreeze.

Poison in some cartridges

The e-cigarette could make it just as addictive as the normal cigarette, says Pötschke Langer. And they supposedly help to quit smoking, are not substantiated. The U.S. regulatory authority FDA has found in some cartridges toxic substances such as carcinogenic nitrosamines. According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment is also unknown whether a risk of "passive-liner" is.

To do a lot of the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM), has the country's authorities individual e-cigarette products have submitted for review. In one case, the Institute has classified the product as a drug, it has not been placed on the market, says a spokesman. Prohibited is the e-cigarette as in Norway, Turkey, Switzerland and even in China, where it was developed 15 years ago. There is strict regulation in Denmark, Canada and also in Austria. The EU Commission wants to investigate the health effects with greater precision.

The Federal Ministry of Health (BMG), impose the prohibition in the most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia as an important step, says a spokeswoman. Since health is national matter, could not interfere with the Federation. About him the subordinate Federal Centre for Health Education, the BMG still speaks clear words: "The used cartridges often contain in addition to the narcotic drug nicotine and other harmful substances is why the use of the e-cigarette discouraged.."

Hrm really? I can see the "issue" related to this subject, yet why are they trying to justify that normal cigarettes are better than the e-cigarettes? It must be too good of a buisness that the government must not tax enough or something. Sounds like something they would do in America.

They should only make it available for people trying to quit smoking regular cigarettes. Then it would be worth the health risks. But not advertise it or put flavors in it that would make it fun for kids.
