Glyphz Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Since a new year is coming and I still have this old computer from 2004. I guess I should upgrade ,not only its outdated but I want to play newer games like everyone else. I'm not sure what type of processor I should pick. For years now I've only had AMD. I haven't used Intel in years, probably since the Pentium 4 days...lol I still remember that commercial with the Intel sound effect. hmm Basicly what I'm looking for is something that will run a game like Battlefield Bad Company #2, or even Red Orchestra 2. I don't do alot on the computer just games and watch movies. Ive been looking on bestbuys website , its the closest store with computers so I guess I'll go there. We have frys here but its kind of far + traffic. I thought about building my own computer but I think i'd waste time, I don't want to f!@# something up. I just want to know some suggests and other things I should look for when buying a new computer . processor/speed, memory, type of memory, etc. Should I take AMD over Intel because of bang for the buck ? I know I'm going to have to buy another graphic card but I'll worry about that later. I'm willing to spend 800$ just on a tower quad & up O yeah! should I stick to HP since thats what I have now or pick something? the computer I use now is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 2GB + 8400 GS graphics + HP + Windows Vista Ghz is all lollz So yeah any computer beside this one is better Lol ! I have a laptop but it overheats & makes alot of noise with win7 + ATI radeon I was looking at this one earlier http://www.bestbuy.c...7&skuId=4144106 Quote
DJ aka GDR DJ Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 My tip is go more to a good videocard !!! .The ATI HD 5670 is not fast enough for games with max settings. A good 4 core Cpu is enough for all new games. All new games need a good Videocard . Is only my opinion Quote
Vanaraud Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 Hm you have case and HD from old PC? maybe also DVD. so it saves about 200$. New mobo+955 AMD black box+amd 5770(or higher) should do the trick. Also which RAM you have? Probably also way updated. Quote
Glyphz Posted December 11, 2011 Author Posted December 11, 2011 So your saying go buy a new case & mobo ? a AMD Phenom II X4 ? I believe the the ram that I have now is ddr2. I don't have HD on this computer. I think I upgraded enough on this computer to 8400 gs, and I think that as far up it will go. From a intergrated care (nVidia Gforce 6150 SE) to nVidia 8400 GS. I'm not sure if a new mobo would fit into this case. If so I would have to go buy a power supply maybe 400 watts ...not even sure about that. I will go to Frys electronics today to see if they got anything good to buy. I checked at bestbuy yesterday but they didn't have a Phenom II in store. The best they had some a Intel core i5 & core i7, which was from 600$ to 800$. I really don't feel like waiting for a shipment which is like up until Dec 19. Maybe I'll find something for a cheaper price at frys, hopefully I can buy a game while I'm at it or a graphics card. what I'll be looking for is Phenom II x4 Or Phenom II x6 if their cheap enough. I would go with Intel but I know for sure their gonna be over 800$ no matter what. I might just go buy a case instead not sure yet or a bundle. Quote
OnionKnight Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Just to add to what DJ said. If you just want it for games, you won't see any difference in performance between a quad core and a hexacore AMD processor. The only issue with the AMD processors is that they aren't the best when it comes to games involving 1-2 core utilization. In BFBC2 though they are only 3-5 fps difference from a i5 2500k and a 955 BE when I tested it on my computers (Both my computers have a HD 5870 in it so there is no difference in Video cards). But when it comes to a game like Skyrim, there is literally a 19 FPS difference between the two. Also Vanaraud is right about reusing your HD from your old pc. The recent flooding in Thailand has inflated prices. A 500GB hard drive that use to be worth $34.99 2 months ago is now $104.99 (so you won't be finding anything here). If you are willing to build your own PC (which really takes no effort. It is like putting together lego). You can make a computer with a i5 2500k, HD 6850 or GTX 460, 8 GB ram, 550-650W PSU, with a sleek gaming case for close to $600 (if you can reuse your hard drive, if you can't it will be close to $700). If you like I can put up a build or you. 1 Quote
Glyphz Posted December 11, 2011 Author Posted December 11, 2011 I went to Fry's Electronics and pick up this after talking to some workers It seemed like they wanted me to buy a Intel instead of a AMD lol . The one they were talking about was gateway i5 . We later talked about maybe building one and the guy said he would build one for me. But I thought about it and said might as well get one now. I think I will get one build later by him though . he sold me a 20 inch monitor Acer for 83$, his sell for me only . I ended up getting this. . . . . . HP Pavillion Model: P6620f P6000 Series Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 830 2.8 Ghz RAM: 6.00 GB System type : 64 bit OS Windows 7 Home premium I guess this is good enough for games now but than my old dual core ;p All I have to worry now is get a new G card and some ram. time to download all my **** back lol Quote

liquid72 Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I built my comp for $750 Aud, i would steer clear of hp, you should be able to buy a good intel board with i5 or i7 cheap enough now. Also a good graphics card is ATI 5770 Hd, its what i use and only cost $69Aud.. Quote
Waster Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I have to recommend Nvidia over ati I have found that ati fans fail after only a year or so. I used to be an ati fan but I was tired of replacing cards because the fan quit no problems with the nvidia I have now, so far Quote
Jefke Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I have to recommend Nvidia over ati I have found that ati fans fail after only a year or so. I used to be an ati fan but I was tired of replacing cards because the fan quit no problems with the nvidia I have now, so far weird using ati card now for over a year (yeah I know need an upgrade XD: waiting for 7000 serie) and don't have problems with it. Hate nVidia because of the fact they just can't overclock so good as I manage to overclock my ati cards... (+ like crossfire over SLI ^^) + fans have nothing to do with ati but with brand because many brands use there own custom cooling solution... (don't shoot me if I'm wrong) Quote
