General Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 if u want theft protection, well, always stay near laptop, and there is program called LoJack that can protect or track laptops (Mac or Windows, both supported) incase stolen. There are some USB stick things that make a loud noise when touched or moved i know. Quote
krAzy :) Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 well...i dont want to stay in library for 6 hours...without taking a break and walk a bit i dont need a tracker or alarm when usb removed only alarm when someone closes laptop Quote

Nordwolf Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Silly question: What happens if someone steals your laptop but keeps the lid open? Who does that? Keeping it open and walking away would look somewhat normal, but so is closing and walking with it tbh Quote
Antichrist Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Kensington lock? Your laptop should already have provisions for it. http://www.kensington.com/kensington/us/us/s/1479/laptop-locks.aspx 2 Quote
jaie Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Task scheduler, but you'll have to look into event ids etc, cause I don't know anything about it myself,b but you should be able to tell your laptop to run a file / script when a certain evennt happens ie power coming out or lid closing, best event I think is to have the laptop send you a text message and start playing music at full volume ( which they can't mute without a password) when the wifi signal strength drops by 2 bars. Though I may be in lullabye land Quote

Though I may be in lullabye land its library wifi...that drops under 2 sometimes :PPP maybe i'll try this: http://keelynet.wordpress.com/2009/10/20/preventing-laptop-theft-with-a-usb-flashdrive/ if thief wants to take laptop, he has to remove flashdrive and alarm will go off Quote
Antichrist Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Just keep in mind that a thief may be able to defeat a software security program. But this all depends on how far from your laptop you will be. If it's within your sight at all times, I think a program could do what you need it to do. But if there will be times that you can't see your laptop, like for a bathroom break, a physical lock might be better for the job. 1 Quote

This is no doubt the safest solution. well....i just keep it in the university library...actually i dont believe anyone would steal my pc from there, but its better to prevent it...and its also more comforting for me knowing its save With a physical lock you'll know it's safe.. However not all laptops can be locked like that, so you'll have to check. If you have to go with software, I hope you find a trustworthy program. Quote
krAzy :) Posted November 2, 2011 Author Posted November 2, 2011 maybe i'll also just put a screensaver where it says: this computer has ALARM with a big chain in the background and a warning sign same effect as fake cameras in stores Quote
General Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 I really do think you should get a USB stick for security. one time at a Microcenter store, my dad was looking at a Mac, and as blatantly as possible, moved it a little, and touched the USB stick. Thing was loud as f*** and my mind was like "great, now we look like two stupid thieves" Quote
TulsaGeoff Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Kensington lock? Your laptop should already have provisions for it. http://www.kensingto...ptop-locks.aspx This is the best way. What happens when you are relying on some software alarm when someone holds the power button down on your laptop to force a hard shutdown?... There are ways to bypass windows and bios passwords either by replacing hardware or reformatting. Quote
