Yes. With good old cd drives, it is possible to simply just play cd's with the audio out. I don't know if it's less expensive tho. You need a 12V and a 5V power supply for the cd drive to work, and the powersupply only hands out 13.8V (which, btw, is _very_ unstable). A power supply to get the correct 12V/5V is quite expensive :P
