Soooo, my contract is up with Verizon next week. Which means I can (finally) get a new phone. I'm just not sure which phone to get. I've been trying to decide between these: The new Droid 3 (3G) or the upcoming Droid Bionic (4G). There are pros and cons to both.

Droid 3:

Pros: Its a 1ghz dual core phone. It has a full qwerty slide out keyboard while still being thin. Its running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). Its cheap! Right now $199, and its buy one get one free. (My wife needs a new phone too.)

Cons: Its 3G.

Basically this phone has everything I could want except 4G connectivity.

Droid Bionic:

Pros: 1st 1ghz dual core 4G phone for Verizon. I think its going to run Android 2.3, but not positive. Said to be the next "flagship" phone for Motorola.

Cons: Its been delayed FOREVER, and now won't be coming out until September. We don't have 4G coverage in my area....yet. The Verizon rep that I talked to said we'd have it by the end of the year. Its rumored to cost $299 with a contract renewal. Yikes!

This phone sounds like its going to be awesome! The only thing that isn't great about it is the price. I need to buy 2 phones, and $600 sounds like a LOT to pay for some cell phones. Part of me wants to future-proof my new phone purchase by getting a 4G, but on the other hand almost everywhere has wi-fi now. Hmmm....

So, what do you guys think? Should I just get the Droid 3, or do you think I'll be kicking myself for not getting a 4G phone? Keep in mind that the phone I pick, I'll be "stuck with" for almost the next 2 years. (Well, short of buying a new phone outright) I've heard that 4G, although cool, is a battery killer. Anybody have 4G coverage that can confirm or deny this?

Thanks for the replies in advance! :D

I thought of that too, but it looks like this will be a 3G phone too: http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/07/29/august-launch-of-verizon-galaxy-s-ii-will-lack-4g-lte/

If that's truly the case, then I would be just as well off getting the Droid 3.

wait 1 month and 8 days

I don't mind waiting. I'm just not sure if 4G is worth the wait and extra cost (for the phone).

it depends if the next version will really gonna be better, right now the galaxy S II is the best choice, but from old friend working at orange france.. he didn't want to give me details but he said wait to half of September, you won't regret it, he always gave me good advise so I'll wait... My contract is over since last month june 26.. so I'm free to choose what ever i want

4G it depends in coverage where you live and beside of that september you may have better choice especially for 4G phones like a new Galaxy S II 4G and iphone 5.. so if 1 month of wait don't bother you!! then wait :)

Thanks for all the replies so far!

Buy a HTC sensation

Unfortunately this is only carried by T-Mobile, and I'm going to stick with Verizon. :(

I don't have anything against the iphone, but i already have an android and i'm thinking I want to stick with an Android powered phone.

Get the 3g phone running droid. It is fast and will work for everything you need and you get a phone for your wife as well. This seems like the best choice without a doubt. These are great phones and they will take care of your needs. This will make your wife happy and a happy wife results in a happy husband.

i have a galaxy S and I love it. Its 3g but i can stream anything i want and the battery life of this phone is unlike any I have ever had. It lasts forever and when i do run it down I can get a full recharge in about 1.5 hours. ANyway.., good luck in whatever phone you choose to buy.

I am putting some serious thought into this. I'm not a huge internet user (on my phone), so I'm not sure if no 4G will be a big deal. However, the slow page load times and download speeds that I get with my Eris are part of the reason why I don't get on the net more with my phone. If I had a fast phone and connection maybe I'd use it a lot more? :hmm

I guess I'm mainly wanting to future proof our phones. I can certainly imagine some apps coming out that will require a 4G connection, and I hate being limited. I have a HTC Droid Eris now and can't run a lot of apps because of a slow processor and only having the 2.1 OS, and it's really irratating to me. :) I know that as of now there probably aren't any (or at least not a lot of) 4G dependent apps, but there probably will be sooner or later.

(BTW: Soooo true: Happy Wife = Happy Husband) :P

This site describes what I was trying to say about 4G better than the last one:

Yeah, I've read a few articles about the 4G myth before, but hey, a true 4G connection or not its still a really fast download/upload speed for a phone. :)
