ajnl Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Are there any good tutorials out there explaining how to host website from a local computer? I have a computer and was wondering if anyone knew of a good tutorial to host a website from it. I looked on google, but there weren't any good ones. I want to use linux, mainly because it is already installed on the computer. Quote

Chuckun Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Are you familiar with installing LAMP? (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP) If not, you need to do that first of all and the LAMP wiki for ubuntu explains everything and it's pretty easy .. Then you'll need to forward ports 80 and 8080 on your router I think? I'm sorry for being so vague, I've never done what you're asking, I've only hosted it as an intranet across a LAN.. Quote
ajnl Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 Awesome thx. Yea I've used LAMP on a linux computer b4. I haven't set it up myself, but I think I can figure it out. I've set up PHP on my macbook and win7 computer. Quote

fR34k Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 This is what generally use to Test/Build websites Local (hope it helps) http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html Quote
Krauersaut Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 This is what generally use to Test/Build websites Local (hope it helps) http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html I find XAMPP quite overpowered for most scenarios as it features not only Apache with PHP and MySQL but also tons of libraries, a mailserver, dozens of scripts and even FTP servers. For Windows I recommend: http://www.wampserver.com/en/index.php Quote
Chuckun Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 For windows: WAMP - but it's a pain in the ass IMO. And if you're on linux, well you're just awesome and you can just install LAMP as it should be Quote

Chuckun Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Good man! I'm on windows 7 at the moment (YUCK) as it's what my laptop was installed with when I got it, and there are certain compatibility issues i'm worried about when changing to linux - and quite frankly i haven't had the time nor motivation to have a test-drive of it Quote

My desktop runs windows 7 professional 64-bit. My other desktop, which I want to use as a server has Ubuntu 9.04 on it atm. And my macbook has snow leopard dual booted with Ubuntu 9.04. Chuckun Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 It's been so long since I used 9.xx that I really couldn't tell you the differences, but I know when I upgraded I loved it.. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/TechnicalOverview That might help I've no idea what 10.10 is like though - probably even better xD Quote
