Popular Post Element' Posted August 13, 2025 Popular Post Posted August 13, 2025 (edited) Hey Y’all ?? I wanted to start a topic to show some of my fishing adventures in the future and hopefully to hear some of yours! Ive been fishing since I was a boy, my dad took me out with worms and a spinning rod. I’ve learned how to fish for trout and have loved it ever since. To me it is the most beautiful fish you can possibly catch out of my nearby creeks. Here we have brown, rainbow, and our state fish the brook trout, an absolute gem. I took a couple years off but now I’m really starting to get back into it. Fishing has always helped me through hard times - and to me is the best therapy I can find. Recently I started getting into using spinners, crank baits, and jerk baits. I was getting pretty successful at catching some good size fish on my jerk baits. Quickly I noticed that the hooks that come on these baits are terrible for the fish. Big trebles with barbs are not good for trout. I mainly catch and release so my main concern is preserving the resources for the future generations. I started looking into barbless hooks and eventually I rigged all my jerk baits/spinners with barbless single hooks. It is far more ethical for the fish and possibly yourself if you happen to hook yourself you don’t have that chance of getting a barb in you. Not to mention releasing the fish is often a breeze and don’t need pliers much. Fast forward a little bit to a couple months ago. I was at one of my fishing holes, it was a cool 73 degrees. I had never caught a fish out of here but it was the perfect habitat for a trout. I threw every bait I had into this hole and came up with nothing. While I was fishing this hole the trout were rising and feeding off of insects on the top jumping out of the water. But I couldn’t get a bite! This had me hot ? I had always heard of fly fishing but it always seemed intimidating to me. My buddy at work is a pretty good fly fisherman and that’s all he does is fly fish. So I get home, do some research. A trouts main diet consists of insects so it only made sense for me to start looking into fly fishing. I started doing youtube searches. These guys were amazing! I could only hope to be as good as some of those guys. Started looking into fly rods - man are they expensive. There is a lot more to fly fishing than spin fishing. I got a recommendation of a cheap(er) one - a TFO Nxt black label. Yesterday I pulled the plug and went and picked it up and a variety of flies. What a beauty it is. At 9’ this rod is huge for me. I’m used to my 5’10” spinning rod with the tip snapped off of it. This will be such a huge change for me. It feels like I have to learn everything all over again. It’s exciting but also intimidating kind of. Im actually really nervous about hitting the creek for my first time with it. I’d love to hear from anyone else that loves fishing like I do, has any stories to tell, or any fly fishers? Here’s some pretty rainbows and a brown from this year. Hopefully I can pull a brook before the season ends. I also hope to return to my hole and catch a fish where I couldn’t before. Ps. Sorry if the images look like shit I had to compress the shit out of them. ✌ Edited April 5 by Element' 9 6 1 Quote
Platinum VIP Aftermath Posted August 14, 2025 Platinum VIP Posted August 14, 2025 I'm jealous you've got trout near you. I used to fish all the time, but sadly kids and work have taken over. I'm curious to see how the fly rod goes for ya, I've always thought I'd just end up tangled in my own line lol. 1 Quote

I’m very fortunate to have 2 creeks within 5 miles of me. One of them is practically in my backyard. ? Also, I took the fly rod out last night. Ended up spending more time tying on flies and getting out of trees than anything. ? Got tangled in my own line like 3 times. That’s all part of the game though. Live & learn. I hope you get out again sometime! Take the kids, they will love it ? (depending on how old) ? Edited August 14, 2025 by Element' 5 Quote
PeruET Posted August 14, 2025 Posted August 14, 2025 It looks really fun, Element :d When I was little, I sometimes helped my uncle fish with nets, like a traditional catch (there are protected areas, so obviously we can't fish there). But I can confirm that it's one of the most fun things there is. Here in Peru, fishing isn't a custom, so that's why I'm not doing it anymore, but you've encouraged me to maybe see where I can do it ? 1 1 Quote
Freerider Posted August 15, 2025 Posted August 15, 2025 Hey Element, nice catches and gear. Sounds like a great place to fish?. I used to fish alot when I was younger. Like you I picked fishing from father who has been fishing the coasts of my hometown since the 60s. When I was a kid he always brought home fresh fish from the sea, so fish was often a big part of my diet. When I go fishing I use a 8' or 9' spinning wheel rod. I never got into fly fishing myself. I mostly fish at the sea or the nearby archipelago, where you can mainly catch pike, perch, and whitefish, and if you’re lucky, sea trout, salmon and zander. There's also a couple of rivers nearby where you can catch rainbow and river trout, salmon and graylings. Where I live, the best times for catching a big fish or salmon fishes are in the spring or autumn. During summertime, the coastal waters temperature rise too much and the salmonfish move to deeper, more colder waters. During that time theres mostly only pike and perch. Here is a couple of photos of my gear and old catches: River trout. Zanders. This is probably my best catch of all time. 4 kg (9 lbs) sea trout. That fish was a real figher. I remember I had to tire it out for almost 20 minutes. Me and my father at sea. To me fishing has always been a great way to spend time with old friends. Most of the time it isn't about catching the fish, it's about spending time together talking shit and maybe drinking a couple of beers while doing it?. However lately fishing has taken a back seat due to other hobbies, but still we try to go out with the old crew once or twice a year to catch up, and maybe catch a fish?. 3 2 1 Quote
Element' Posted August 24, 2025 Author Posted August 24, 2025 Woke up at 5:00 AM, made some coffee and a bite to eat and headed out to the spot I couldn't catch anything in before. By the time I got down into my spot it was around 6:00 and the sun was starting to come up. Was also pouring but wasn't supposed to last long. The walk down is horrible but getting back up is even worse. 5'-6' brushes and briars. No pain - No gain! I must have caught 10-11 (maybe more) Brown trout and 1 rainbow in this hole. My hook set is getting deadly haha. Was the best day I've had in a looooong time Had so much fun here. The fly rod has paid off ? PS. Don't mind me grunting and shit, sorry about that. It be like that when you're trying to wrangle a fish ? 2 4 1 Quote

Element' Posted December 6, 2025 Author Posted December 6, 2025 (edited) So, the winter months are finally here and it's really getting cold here now. Most days are way too cold to fish. So, I picked up fly tying to keep myself busy in the cold months. (Ja, I'm getting old.) Mainly doing nymphs for now but will start dry flies soon. Are there any other fly tiers on here? I've only been tying for 3 weeks but I've already tied a bunch of patterns. It has really helped to quiet my mind as fishing does. I tied all these from the blue lines down! Thanks for looking ☮️ Edited December 6, 2025 by Element' 1 3 1 Quote

Element' Posted April 5 Author Posted April 5 (edited) Stocked trout season is here for me! I will try to be as active as possible, but most of my free time will be spent out on the creek doing what I love. I've been doing a lot of tying as well. I only use the flies that I tie from now on because there is no better feeling than catching a fish on a fly that you tied! I think I may have topped my personal best from last year as well. Here's a pic of a normal sized rainbow in my net for comparison to how big he was! Caught on my frenchie I tied! v32! PS. Suck on that Butters! Edited April 5 by Element' 2 2 2 Quote
