At the moment I've only ever bought index funds or ETFs and plan to hold them for the long term.

I would like to use a small percentage of my portfolio to buy individual stocks and maybe trade more short term. What I don't understand when it comes to trade is what indicators there are and how to use them to identify which stocks to buy. Anyone have a short explanation of and how to use indicators?

This is my sample chart - which I trade on MU -  You can check RSI, VMAP, Bollinger bands, Volume avg oscillator, etc etc.

At the end of the day buy near support with tight stop loss. Don't marry to positions unless you are not long.

This is my T -

I sell put on T and make premium out of it and if i have to purchase it - it's ok - 7% dividend is good enough to hold it for long run.

Thanks for the help, I'll start looking into those and reading about them. You say "etc etc" but is there a list of indicators?

Their are tons of it. Their is no list of indicators but RSI, MACD, Eliot Oscillator, VMAP, etc are popular. Here is part of the list -

Here is one example on SPY -  Check RSI - Index went down but RSI was showing divergence - that's the point when u go in mostly.
