  1. Samsung's next major smartphones could launch in February and come in two sizes, according to news reports Monday. Expected to be called the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, the new devices may be unveiled on February 20, according to blog SamMobile. South Korea's Electronic Times is reporting the 2016 smartphone line would have a standard 5.2-inch version with straight sides and a larger 5.5-inch variant with curved sides. That would deviate from the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, which both debuted in 2015 with 5.1-inch screens, though the Edge had curved sides. Samsung remains the only phone maker to use a vertically curve-edged display. LG's G Flex and G Flex 2 devices slightly curved downward at the middle. Since demand for the Galaxy S6 Edge initially outstripped supply at one point, there's some question as to whether Samsung has learned from that release. Samsung reportedly plans to have 5 million handsets ready to go at launch: 3.3 million of the Galaxy S7 and 1.7 million of the Galaxy S7 Edge. Rumored launch dates for the flagship phones have varied, from as early as next week at Las Vegas' Consumer Electronics Show -- which would be ahead of Samsung's typical cycle -- to February 20, right around Barcelona's Mobile World Congress trade show, the company's usual venue. Other recent rumors suggest the Galaxy S7 could have an iris scanner for unlocking the phone with your eyes, USB Type-C charging, and a pressure-sensitive display similar to 3D Touch on the Apple iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. 2. The much-speculated Samsung Galaxy View has finally been revealed in images, thanks to the serial leaker EVleaks. The first glimpse of the tablet surfaced at IFA 2015 in the form of a teaser video. The Galaxy View comes with a massive 18.4-inch full HD display, which is bigger than any other tablet on the market aside from some PC all-in-ones that double as tablets. Samsung is clearly pushing boundaries here, though. It’s not the first time a company has pitched a tablet with such a big display. For example, Alcatel unveiled the OneTouch Go Play with a screen size of 17.3 inches. Interestingly, in the above image, you can see a stand behind the device; it seems to resemble the Microsoft Surface‘s stand. The Galaxy View had also appeared on several third-party seller websites with a price tag of $600 for the 32GB variant, along with some additional specifications and availability info. The listings were removed as soon as the leak went viral, though. A separate report from GSM Arena suggests the device will come powered by an Exynos 758 chipset, 2GB RAM, and 32GB of storage that’s expandable to 128GB. It will come in two variants: One with Wi-Fi support and the other with 3G/4G LTE, the latter of which will cost more, of course. The base model, at $600, undercuts the iPad Pro, so it’s reasonable to assume the entire range will also undercut Apple’s larger tablet in similar configurations. And if you want a large-screen tablet for media consumption, at least, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro can’t touch an 18.4-inch display. Other leaks have indicated the Galaxy View will have a 2.1-megapixel front camera and a giant 5,700mAh battery. A third-party US retailer, Adorama, uploaded the following description of the device: “The Samsung Galaxy View is TV reimagined for the streaming age. The 18.4-inch FHD large screen brings you a portable, touchable TV experience plus a bigger window to your favorite apps and content, so you can do more, view more, and play more. Enjoy the home theater experience – anywhere! This listing was also taken down. No matter what you think of the Galaxy View, it’s generating some buzz since it’s almost three times the size of the average tablet. It looks like Samsung is indeed trying to pitch the device as something that falls between a tablet and a television, instead of a tablet and a PC. It will be interesting to see what kind of consumer response this gigantic tablet generates. The 18.4-inch screen will clearly require a lot of battery power, so if it turns out 5,700mAh isn’t enough, the view won’t be nearly as sweet. Source http://www.extremetech.com/
  3. It hasn't been a long time since the Galaxy S6 edge plus and Note 5 were launched, but seems like Samsung as always wants to keep the market accommodated with its device and has finished producing its new flagship, The Galaxy S7 aka Project Lucky. The smartphone is suspected to launch next year. Specification- The Samsung Galaxy S7 would be running on the Snapdragon 820 chipset and The Adreno 530 GPU, which would be featuring the in house Kyro cores developed by Qualcomm instead of the ARM chipset which would deal with the significant underclocking and throttling issue of the 810 chipset. The Snapdragon 820 is the first self made 64-bit processor from Qualcomm and is based on the Samsung's 14nm FinFET process, Click Here To read more about the features of Snapdragon 820. It is also rumored that an another variant of the S7 would be featuring the new Mongoose chipset also referred to as the new Exynos 7430 Hero from Samsung. The Galaxy S7 would be featuring 4 Gigabytes of Ram, 64 Gb of ROM, a 5.7 inch 1440 x 2560 pixel display, a 16 Mp rear and a 5Mp front camera and is running on 5.1.1 version of Android at the current time. The Galaxy S7 would be featuring the UFS 2.0 memory controller for data storage and transfer as in the Galaxy S6. But this technology currently isn't compatible with micro SD card, however Samsung is working on implementing it with micro Sd card for future device and the S7. It has also been speculated that the final version of the S7 would feature a 20 Megapixel Isocell camera sensor instead of the 16Mp in the current test version. Source http://www.unrevealtech.com/
  4. Samsung has announced a pair of high-capacity SSDs based on its 3D NAND (also known as V-NAND) technology — the 850 EVO and the 850 Pro. Specs on the drives are similar to the smaller capacity products that have already launched, but the drive densities have skyrocketed. The 2TB 850 Pro contains 128 individual 32-layer Flash ICs (128Gb capacity per IC, or 16GB). Samsung also upgraded the MHX NAND controller to handle 2TB arrays, and boosted the on-drive cache to 16Gb (2GB) of LPDDR3. Take the original 850 Pro and 850 Evo and scale them up, and this is what you get. Performance specs on the two drives haven’t been disclosed yet, but we’d expect the 850 Pro to be moderately faster than the 850 EVO, which uses TLC NAND and an SLC cache buffer to boost overall performance. Readers may be concerned about the 850 EVO suffering from some of the same issues that have plagued the original 840 EVO, but we’ve seen no reports that link the 850 EVO to similar performance degradation — and there’s reason to think it may not be an issue. Samsung’s vertical NAND is built on 40nm technology rather than the 19nm NAND that Samsung used on the 840 EVO. While lower process nodes are typically thought of as being unilaterally good for semiconductor design, that’s not the case for NAND flash, which suffers lower data retention and decreased durability as the process node shrinks. In this case, the 850 EVO likely benefits from being built on higher process technology while still offering the benefits of vertical design. We’ve covered Samsung’s V-NAND, the 850 Pro, and 850 EVO in the past, so readers wanting more information on these topics are advised to refer to those articles. The one difference we do know about as of this writing is the warranty period on the two drives and the total write guarantee is quite different. Samsung guarantees the 850 EVO to 150TB written, whereas the 850 Pro is guaranteed for 10 years or 300TB written. Previous testing has confirmed that drive manufacturers tend to be extremely conservative about the maximum write capacity of their drives; even TLC drives are often capable of writing 2-3x more data than the manufacturer specifies. Pricing for the new drives is reportedly set at $800 for the 2TB 850 EVO and $1000 for the 2TB 850 Pro. while still a huge amount of money in absolute terms, these figures show that the 850 Pro has come down to 50 cents per GB — a huge advance compared to a few years ago, when $1 per GB was common, even on budget drives. We don’t expect to see SSDs fall to HDD per-GB pricing in the near-term future, but the gap between the two standards should continue to decrease, making larger capacity SSDs more affordable in the process. 5. Samsung has been accused of disabling Microsoft's software in preference for its own, leaving computers insecure. Microsoft technical expert Patrick Barker said he had found Samsung software downloading and running a file called Disable_Windowsupdate.exe, while helping a user with a computer problem. He said "a few Samsung-manufactured computer systems" were affected. Samsung said it was just giving customers the choice about running Windows software. "It is not true that we are blocking a Windows 8.1 operating system update on our computers," Samsung said in a statement. "As part of our commitment to consumer satisfaction, we are providing our users with the option to choose if and when they want to update the Windows software on their products." According to Samsung, the SW update allows users "to download the newest drives, updates and software for your Windows PC". But the response baffled Mr Barker. "I never implied it specifically blocked a Windows 8.1 OS system update, just that their SW Update software is preventing Windows Update from automatically installing updates, and forcing the user to have it set to 'let me choose whether to download and install,'" he wrote in his blog. "It's disabling Windows Update from working as the user intends it to," he added. Mr Barker said if the Windows Update was turned on manually, it was disabled by the Samsung update when the machine was rebooted. The software did not come pre-installed on computers but downloaded in the background, he said. "It doesn't appear to uninstall properly," he added. Parts of the software remained, including the folder that contained the command to disable Windows Update, he wrote in his blog. Microsoft said: "Windows Update remains a critical component of our security commitment to our customers." "We do not recommend disabling or modifying Windows Update in any way as this could expose a customer to increased security risks. "We are in contact with Samsung to address this issue." Superfish Security consultant Graham Cluley said that turning off Windows Update was a "risky move" for any company. "As there are many instances of malware trying to deliberately disable Windows Update in order to get on with their dirty work, I personally wouldn't feel entirely comfortable if Samsung was going around doing the job for them," he wrote in his blog. The news did not go down well on Twitter either, with some comparing what Samsung was doing with an earlier Lenovo case. In February, the Chinese computer maker was forced to remove hidden adware from its laptops and PCs. The adware - dubbed Superfish - was potentially compromising security, experts said. 6. Nvidia Corp has sued rival chipmakers Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics, accusing both companies of infringing its patents on graphics processing technology. The U.S. chipmaker vies with Qualcomm in the business of providing chips for smartphones and tablets. It said on Thursday that Qualcomm and Samsung had used Nvidia's patented technologies without a license in Samsung's mobile devices, including the just-launched Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge. Nvidia said Samsung devices made with graphics technology from Qualcomm, Britain's ARM Holdings and Imagination Technologies infringed on its patents. "They're using our technology for free in their devices today and they're shipping an enormous number of devices," Nvidia Chief Executive Jen-Hsun Huang said on a conference call. Samsung, the world's biggest smartphone maker, said it would fight Nvidia's lawsuits. "Following a thorough review of the complaint, we will take all measures necessary against NVIDIA's claims," the South Korean firm said in an e-mailed statement, without elaborating on the measures it could take. Nvidia did not say it is suing Imagination or ARM but it did say it is asking the U.S. International Trade Commission to prevent shipments of Samsung devices containing ARM's Mali or Imagination's PowerVR graphics architectures, as well as Qualcomm's graphics technology. Graphics technology from Imagination is also used in Apple Inc's iPhones. Asked whether Nvidia plans to sue Apple since it uses Imagination's technology, Huang declined to comment. "Today we’re focused on Samsung and Qualcomm, and we continue to have productive conversations with a lot of other companies out there,” he said. Nvidia made its name developing leading graphics technology for high-end personal computers but has struggled to expand into smartphones, a market dominated by Qualcomm. Nvidia discussed its patents with Samsung for "a couple" of years before deciding to take legal action, Huang said. Last year, Nvidia announced that it planned to license its graphics technology to other companies. But it has not announced any licensing deals since then. Nvidia said its lawsuits were filed at the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware and at the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington. Such dual filings are typical of infringement lawsuits since the district courts can award financial damages and the Commission cannot. At the same time, the Commission can more easily ban infringing products from the U.S. market. ARM declined to comment. Qualcomm did not respond to a request for comment. 7. Samsung has included a fingerprint scanner on a number of devices since it debuted one on the Galaxy S5, so it's no surprise at all to hear that the Galaxy Note 4 will come with one as well, but this time it could be in for a few improvements. According to a 'credible source' speaking to SamMobile, the Galaxy Note 4 will use the Synaptics' Natural ID solution, just like the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Alpha. This means that to operate the scanner properly you'll have to swipe down from the lower part of the screen to the home button, a necessity which some users find counter intuitive and others still may not even be aware of, so it's perhaps not ideal. More positively the Note 4 apparently includes the four fingerprint scanning features from the Galaxy S5, specifically Screen Lock, Private Mode, Samsung Account Verification and PayPal Payments, but at least two new features may be inbound as well. Smart fingersFirst up there's 'Fingerprint Shortcuts', which allows you to assign a function or application to each registered fingerprint, so for example if you register one finger to open the browser then unlocking the phone with that one will take you straight to the browser rather than the home screen. Another new feature that's apparently coming to the Galaxy Note 4 is 'Web Sign-in', which allows you to sign in to websites that can remember passwords by swiping your finger over the home key, saving you from troublesome typing while remaining more secure than if you simply left sites signed in. It's feasible that these new features could also come to other Samsung devices as a software update at some point, so if you're rocking a Galaxy S5 you might benefit too. 8. Samsung Galaxy S IV leaked press release shots? We of SamMobile just received a huge tip from our insider at Samsung and according to him this is the next generation of the Galaxy S series, the Galaxy S IV. We can’t 100% confirm if this is indeed the Galaxy S IV but the picture he sent us looks really sharp and doesn’t look fake at all. The design of the device looks also very similar to the design of the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Premier, which makes this picture more authentic. By looking at the picture of the device we observed a few things, the device will use on-screen buttons as there is no home-button present on the device (Finally), the bezel around the device is much thinner and the device features a large display. We didn’t get any confirmation on the specifications of the Galaxy S IV but the rumoured specifications are listed below: - Exynos 5450 Quad-Core CPU clocked at 2.0GHz - Mali-T658 GPU - 2GB of RAM - 4.99” SuperAMOLED FULL HD resolution (1080×1920) Display - 13 Megapixel Rear Facing Camera - 2 Megapixel Front Facing Camera - Android 4.2.1 (Out of the box) Reaction SamMobile: - Source claimed to have more pictures. - It’s hard to believe. - Mix between Galaxy S III / Galaxy Premier could make this render (press photo) looks real. - Before the official presentation by Samsung is nothing 100% sure. source

  10. Apple Must Publish Notice Samsung Didn’t Copy IPad in U.K. Apple Inc. (AAPL) was ordered by a judge to publish a notice on its U.K. website and in British newspapers alerting people to a ruling that Samsung Electronics Co. didn’t copy designs for the iPad. The notice should outline the July 9 London court decision that Samsung’s Galaxy tablets don’t infringe Apple’s registered designs, Judge Colin Birss said today. It should be posted on Apple’s U.K. home page for six months and published in several newspapers and magazines to correct any impression the South Korea-based company was copying Apple’s product, Birss said. The order means Apple will have to publish “an advertisement” for Samsung, Richard Hacon, a lawyer for Cupertino, California-based Apple, told the court. “No company likes to refer to a rival on its website.” Apple is fighting patent lawsuits around the globe against competitors including Google Inc., HTC Corp. (2498) and Samsung as it competes for dominance of the smartphone and tablet computer markets. The firms have accused each other of copying designs and technology in their mobile devices. Legal battles about the similarity of Samsung and Apple tablets are being fought in Germany, the Netherlands and the U.S. Public Statements Birss said in his July 9 ruling that Samsung’s tablets were unlikely to be confused with the iPad because they are “not as cool.” He declined today to grant Samsung’s bid for an injunction blocking Apple from making public statements that the Galaxy infringed its design rights. “They are entitled to their opinion,” he said Apple spokesman Alan Hely didn’t immediately respond to a phone call and e-mail requesting comment on the judge’s order. “Should Apple continue to make excessive legal claims based on such generic designs, innovation in the industry could be harmed and consumer choice unduly limited,” Samsung said in a statement after the hearing. “The war between these two companies seems to be escalating even further,” said Colin Fowler, an intellectual property lawyer at London-based Rouse. He said much of the publicity around the July 9 ruling focused on Birss’ comments about Samsung not being as cool. “From a victory in court they were suddenly on the back foot,” Fowler said in a phone interview. “Getting this order fits in with the context of them trying to restore the balance.” ‘Commercial Harm’ Comments made by Apple after that ruling unfairly implied that Samsung had copied designs, Samsung’s lawyer Kathryn Pickard said at the hearing. That “caused real commercial harm.” As well as Apple’s website, the company must pay for notices in the Financial Times, the Daily Mail, Guardian Mobile magazine, and T3, according to a draft copy of the order provided by Samsung’s lawyers. Apple’s lawyer said the company would appeal the July 9 decision and Judge Birss granted the company permission to take its case to the court of appeal. source

  12. Samsung alters tablet design for Germany Samsung Electronics said on Thursday it had modified the design of its newest tablet PC to bypass a sales ban in Germany, and would start selling it there as early as this week. The Galaxy Tab 10.1N, based on the Galaxy Tab 10.1, has a different metal frame and the location of the speakers has been changed, a spokesman for the South Korean company told AFP. Samsung was dealt a blow in September, when a German court ruled that it infringed upon Apple's design patents for its iPad. The court banned sales and marketing for the Galaxy Tab 10.1. In a spate of lawsuits, Samsung and Apple accused each other of copying designs or technology for each other's smartphones and tablet computers. Apart from Germany, they have also launched patent claims against each another in the United States, Japan, South Korea and Australia. Apple won a victory against Samsung in Australia last month, when a judge upheld a temporary injunction blocking the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Later in October Samsung announced it was trying to block the sale of Apple's newest product, the iPhone 4S, in Japan and Australia. Motorola earlier this month won an injunction banning Apple Germany’s parent company, Apple Inc., from marketing mobile devices in Germany but Apple has apparently been able to work around it and is still selling its iPhones and iPads here.
