"Return To Castle Wolfenstein" (2001) was the parent of ET. It was a great game. "Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory" (2003) was supposed to be the next version of the game, but due to fighting within the company, the developers decided to release it as a free game for the world to play.

That is how it all started.

Quick and dirty: It sucks.

As Krauersaut said, the game was terrible. Apparently, they handed game a team of "newbies", and they completely blew it. The game felt like it was an early alpha version, instead of anything that was release worthy. A couple mods attempted to help the multi-player, but it was too little, too late.

It is so bad that I got for free from a buddy, who himself did not want it, I played it for a couple hours, then just uninstalled it and never played it again.

Its a shame the new game had to die out so quickly, with that being said I would figure that ET would have made some sort of come back considering most people left when the new game came out. I've heard nothing but awful reviews about the game yet it still seems like the ET scene is still a little dry.
