Ol Smoke Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 This is about the third or fourth movie that I have seen that covers an actual tale from the 1840's, about a mountain man named Joe Meek. If you want something to read that will actually interest you, read the stories of the first mountain men here in the US. Joe Meek was a mountain that traveled with the Hudson Bay group. He got attacked by a bear and was left for dead. But he actually wasn't. He traveled alone over 150 miles naked and was set upon by Indians and other wild animals but lived to get back to the group. He blamed the head of the group for leaving him and was determined to kill him. The book he wrote about that journey is great. 1 Quote
Chameleon Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 What did you think of the movie its self? I really enjoyed it. I have a lot of old mountain man stories I can tell from growing up here in KY. Let me know and I shall spit and sputter them out lol Quote
Ol Smoke Posted January 25, 2016 Author Posted January 25, 2016 I didn't see the movie, but I have seen about 10 previews of it. So I got the gist of it. When I was in high school I really got into the Indian and Mountain man stuff. I read every book there was about those guys. Look at this picture I took of an area near Yellowstone. This was the actual location of the spring rendezvous in 1838. It was the last rendezvous that the famous mountain men like Bridger, Carson, and others would ever attend. After this they started making trail heads for the first wagons going west. All the Indians that attended this certain rendezvous died within 2 years of it. Most of the white guys receded into the mountains and stopped trapping beaver. It was all over with in 5 years. Silk hats from China were the thing. But then the mountain men came down and moved to Iowa and Kansas, Nebraska, and as far east as Ohio, just to kill Buffalo. That was over in 3 years. Yep. In 3 years over 15 million Buffalo were killed and 1 million Indians. Now you know why I don't like people who make fun of my Indian heritage. Let me see if I can C & P that picture here: 1 Quote
Kay Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 I actually live in the area that this movie was shot in, so it was pretty neat to see it portrayed! I thought Tom Hardy actually stole the movie, his performance was really good imo Quote
