Ol Smoke Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 First of all, I use a very good oil for this. It has no paraffin's in it. (Wax) Machinist oil or sewing machine oil will work. Take the fan out of the case or wherever it is. Doesn't matter. Look for a small round tag that usually has a logo on it or some writing. Peel that off, and toss it. Now there is usually a dust cover over the hole. Pull that dust cover out and set it aside. Place about 5 drops of oil right on top of the spindle and let it run down inside the armature. Spin the blade many times to get the oil into the area of the bearing. Put the dust cover back on and plug the fan back in. It should run smooth and quiet for many more months. 1 Quote

Leader RedBaird Posted January 10, 2015 Leader Posted January 10, 2015 So, you're talking about bearing noise and not blade noise, I presume. You do this when the fan starts 'rumbling'? Quote
Ol Smoke Posted January 10, 2015 Author Posted January 10, 2015 Yeah Redbaird. When you start to hear a noisy fan. It usually starts with a harmonic whirr, then gets worse from there. As soon as the fan starts getting noisy, then do the fix I posted. Fans can last many years if kept lubricated. WD40 is not a good lube. It is more of an anti-squeak and a moisture controller for doors and locks. One other way of making a fan last longer is to clean it regularly. The dust accumulation on the blades puts a lot of stress on the bearing. If you just turn the PC off, and then vacuum the fans and the heat sinks, and the PSU your system will last much longer and run so much cooler. One of the easiest ways to keep your PC tower cleaner, is to get it off the floor. About 2 to 3 inches. It is amazing how much cleaner it will stay inside by getting it up just that little bit. Hope that helps. 1 Quote
