If you can't connect to the server, and you don't know why, it's always a good idea to check this website. The minecraft session servers are down more often than you'd think :/

This website here is really nice, as it shows the downtime when a certain feature is offline. I can speak for Chrome users as well and say that you can setup desktop notifications to tell you when the servers are up/down. Really helpful :D

Yep, server uptime is 0 Days, 12 Hours, 23 Minutes so I'm guessing the Minecraft Log-in and/or Session servers were offline.
