This took place in Barstow, California in 1975.  I was racing in a cross country motorcycle race with a friend.  We were racing over the open desert from Barstow

to Las Vegas.  I was looking around at the hundred and something riders there when I saw, who I thought, was Steve McQueen.  It turned out it was.  But the greatest

thing I saw during this race was a guy riding a 400 Husky with a dog on the gas tank.  I found he road with that dog everywhere and the dog never fell off.  He had

made a carpeted area on the gas tank for the dog to ride on.  I saw him twice on the course and the dog was just riding along....about 75mph.

The cool thing....the dog wore goggles and a handkerchief around his neck.  The dog's name was "Cookie".  John McGowan was the guy's name.
