Why isn't this server etpro? Just curious.

With all the ping variences i see especially in fa servers antiwarp would be a godsend.

I agree about the fact that etpro (while being very old and not updated for years) addressed all the bugs and issues, with competitive play in mind.

They didn't add new weapons and s... to the game, but they fixed what needed to be fixed, and added what needed to be added (other mods didn't add much, other than copying etpro features I don't see big improvements, maybe  shrubbot commands and stuff for pub admins)

I often see players 'teleport' on silent mod, I have never seen that happening on etpro (but I guess there could be some setting on silent to block that, only they don't wanna use it ;) ) so probably etpro antiwarp is superior.

I have never gotten stuck in a wall after a revive on etpro, and it happens quite often on etpub/silent, you have to selfkill and you can lose a game.

The problem is etpro wants ET 2.60b, so all those players who don't realize this patch came out eons ago and still haven't patched, would be out. And etpro wants 2.60b server side too (even if in this case it would just complain with a message I think, FA etpro server was like that and it still worked)

That is the reason, I think, among other things.

Silent is new and still in development, but they obviously have a different target in mind. If I made a mod, I would at first make a clone of etpro as close as possible, then (maybe) add tripmines and s..t. Not viceversa. That tells you what the target is.

Anyway silent has cvars against warpers and players who teleport, the problem is setting them to be strict enough ;)

And keep in mind that some low pingers could warp more than high pingers, you don't have to look at the scoreboard, maybe go spec and look how flat the lagometer of that player is.

here is the last line of my mtr to sw server:

Loss%  Snt   Last   Avg  Best  Wrst StDev
0.0%   121  175.5 175.3 173.9 177.8   0.4

packet loss: 0%

difference between average, and best or worst: lower than 3 milliseconds

standard deviation: 0.4

there are players whose ping is lower than mine but way less stable, and you can notice that in game or from demos.

fail

this,

if everyone on the server would play for obj and with the right classes it would be great, but ofcourse as the server gets more crowded this is just in vain

well, the fact that

team game + public server = fail

was already known, and that's why I said some players don't play it. But maybe that was a particularly bad day, I will still give the server a chance.

It's just a problem of respect and fairness to your enemies and your team mates.

- As regards respecting enemies, well, I have been spawn-mined in 1vs2 but this is more a server config problem than a fair play one, as it has been said multiple times. Same goes for panza+rifle in 4vs3 (or 4 vs 2.5 :P)

- As regards respecting team mates and the spirit of the game, there has been a lot of talk about this 'I play for fun' a.k.a. 'I don't care' thing. But clearly there is a line.

  • If someone holds the obj, imho that's crossing the line for sure.
  • If someone said 'here I play as I want, gtfo, I don't play for obj', that's crossing the line (it has happened, I'm not making this up).
  • If someone plays only with pistol, and dies a lot and his team loses, then he says 'I like to play with Luger/Colt' or 'I am training', that's crossing the line (imho) (this is fictional)
  • If someone plays only covert-op and even wastes time stealing unis (as if players in the same enemy fireteam could fall for it), that's probably crossing the line or really close.
  • If someone plays engi as axis (let's say 3on3 or 2on2) in the 1st stage of supply or braundorf, well maybe they could say 'play medic till they plant, u nub', but that's not crossing the line because it's still a tactic that could work sometimes.

If I'm tired and I don't focus or I play bad, if I don't hit/aim well, if I selfkill on full by mistake, that's hopefully not crossing the line.

etc. etc.

p.s.

at this point I'm not sure if the redirection from hc is still a good idea, since sw server is very different and usually empty.

(And there is a massive amount of ragequits)

Maybe we could set a couple of fixed times (UTC or GMT, and everyone converts) one for Euros and one for Americans, etc. to check for players on the server everyday.

SunLight, I think you bring up some good points, but as far as things that are crossing the line, I'd like to make something clear:

Yes, on SW you should be playing objective with your team.

But as far as the specific strats or the dos and don'ts for when to be a medic or engie or covert ops, not everyone knows all of this. I'll admit I'm as noob as it will get for SW. I've spent 95% of my ET time playing jaymod servers. I'm maybe average at that. I am, however, a lover of playing for the objective.

I had this very thought as well, I don't really think as well that having that redirect on the server is a good idea. Since it got implemented all I keep hearing is

  • Why is Silent 1 empty?
  • Omg! wtf, why did we vote the same map again.
  • Not playing SW mode at all. Not doing obj.
  • Players quitting on second round
  • Players RQ, because of the increase in skills from players.
  • Panzering and Rifling in 3v2, 3v3 (I know its not meant to be an 'etpro' server but there is still a level of 'sportsmanship" for lack of words or 'competitiveness'  in playing SW mode)
  • Players joining in second round 4v3 during a nice match in round 1, I do encourage everyone to play even it is uneven 4v3 5v6 etc... but not during the second half of a map. Or even during the last 3 minutes of a 8 minute clock set etc..

Nonetheless, it's a pub server I try to keep an open mind and guide some of these guys, I even noticed Jedi as medic and Engie for once, and actually playing the obj :D

In fact I said not knowing tactics is not crossing the line, one day we even trickjumped because everyone agreed

I was just a bit mad because, you know, if you see that players don't care, then the whole purpose of trying to win the map makes no sense. I have been the cause for my team's loss countless times since I play in this server, but I never had that 'I don't care' attitude.

I played with Jedi many times and I never told him anything, only that day a lot if bad things happened in a row, and I got a bit frustrated, so I got mad because he played only covert, and for me coverts are only to open doors and blowing command posts (plus occasional sniping in some parts of some maps only).

But talking about the attitude, for example on etpro servers I have heard countless times the 'don't move the truck too soon on supply' thing. You know what? The 1st time I heard it I didn't question it. I thought 'if they are pros, they must know better' so I just did. And of course after you play a bit and you see that axis uses it as shield, you realize why.

When I made some days ago a 2vs2 with Mirage, he said, I did. Because I figured out that he's more skilled than me so I thought him as the 'team leader'. And guess what? We won quite easily.
