MushR0om Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Hey guys, like the title said, I would like to get somme tipps to record the song I wrote (http://fearless-assassins.com/topic/45243-a-song-i-wrote/). It's a hard rock song and I don't know anything about a recording.. So my questions are : - which instrument first? (guitar, bass, drums or vocals) - shall I record in live or by mixing parts? - which instrument has to be louder? I wait for any propositions Quote
Chameleon Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 Drums and bass first... If you have a whole band everyone should play together each song, but focus on the bass and drums, that is the backbone of any song. Don't worry about mixing anything at that point just make sure both of those instruments are laid down exactly as you want them. Depending on what instruments your band or you are planning to play on each song I would go next with rhythm guitar maybe even do two separate tracks of rhythm to give it some diversity panning one track to the left and the other to the right, which when done right makes for great ear candy. If you are doing any keys at all I would add them at this point unless they are central to the main riff, otherwise most key tracks are filler. I would mix all this down just the way you want it, exactly how you want the finished product to sound, then lay down the vox.. Makes getting the vox just the way you want it easier when the song is at it's completion.. Before you do the vox though, I would take the music track home for a couple weeks and play the crap out of it, over and over and over singing a long with it, until it becomes second nature to you, then take that bad boy back to the studio and lay it down.. Once you go to master the final, master it it once and take it home for a couple weeks, you will find things you wanna change then take it back and tweak out the things you want. Of course all of this comes down to taste, you may find a way that suits you better, but I can tell you from over 20 years of experience this is the best route.. If you have any questions just pm me or add me on xfire I would be happy to help out if I can. I actually engineer in a studio Quote
MushR0om Posted March 15, 2013 Author Posted March 15, 2013 I'm sorry Chron but I saw your post after recording.. I started by drums (I'm not a drummer so it took me a long time ^^), then the rythm guitar (I'll put it 30% left), then the lead guitar (30% right), the solo guitar and I finished with the bass (I had to wait a friend of mine who give me his bass) Of course vocals came last I'll post the music when I'll finish the mix and effects and others Quote
