Speedy* Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 (edited) well, i am not a dj, nor i am practicing for it (though, i would if i had time), but i heard it takes a lot of time to master the skills of DJ'ing. Though, i know a bit about it: At first u need the gear ofcourse, you better check that on the internet since i don't want to give wrong advice about which and what is better I think the most important part of a DJ is "beatmatching". for beatmathing you need to know the BPM of the songs you are going to play. BPM = Beats per minute. you can use a program to calculate the BPM of every song for you, or you can just do it manually. the purpose of beatmatching is to get two tracks moving to the same beat. For mashups it is also important to take two songs which are written in the same key (like F minor, B minor etc. etc.). This will allow you to make the mashup harmonic which is a MUST. Harmonic means that all the tone heights in your songs are in balance and are pleasant for the ear. So mashup a song in F minor with a song in F minor, and not with a song in C Major. (same goes for using the beats and melody of one track and the vocals of another. Though, you can change the key of songs i believe with a pitch or something (i don't know alot about pitching or changing the keys, so i cant realy help you with that). As i can see in your sig, you are a fan of Defqon, so i don't think u have alot of work with matching melodies I hope i helped you a bit, i found an excellent tutorial for beginning a DJ career, but at the moment i can't find it. Will let you know when i find it But for now good luck! Oh and about Virtual DJ vs Traktor, i heard Virtual DJ is harder to master, but has a more rewarding outcome for producing. VDJ vs Traktor is like Windows vs Apple or Android vs iOS (iPhone). they are both good but differ a bit here and there. Edit2: i found a very good video on youtube which explaines beatmatching and keys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=V0FScwZTgTk Edited December 12, 2012 by VSSpeedy Quote
