If you are already running windows you can simply install and dual boot Ubuntu with the Ubuntu Windows Installer (wubi: http://www.ubuntu.co...ndows-installer) it installs like a regular application which you can uninstall from Control Panel - Program Files. It will ask you how large you want the partition I usually go with 20Gb should be adequate enough for regular use and testing. Safest way without crapping your system.

does wubi create another partition or not? never tried it.

if you want to use them at the same time (no dual boot, but really at the same time), I guess you need a virtual machine.

You can install it using virtualbox or similar software, then you can have a window with Linux inside your win desktop.

No it does not create a real partition, but you can transfer the installation to a real partition.
