Cheapest way to buy it is via an OEM copy ...

WIN 7 Home Premium 64 bit = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116986 = $95.00 w/ Free Shipping

WIN 7 Professional 64 bit = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116992 = $130.00 w/ Free Shipping

You won't need to consider WIN 7 Ultimate.

You WON'T get Microsoft Tech support buying an OEM copy ... but, ask yourself when was the last time you called them anyways ?

The $200+ copies are the 'Retail' copies that include Tech support, and BOTH the 32 & 64 bit version CD's, you DO NOT need the 32 bit most likely.

PM me if you need more info/help ... I bought WIN 7 Pro 64 bit from NewEgg this way.

Were/what are you studying? If you're doing a major in Computer Science, you might be able to get to MSDN:AA (and then get it for free). In the netherlands, there is a group called surfspot, which offers low price versions of (among others) Microsoft products. I see that you can also get it directly by a Windows 7 upgrade version (requires clean install) here

The $120 is the upgrade version, $200 is the full version. Difference, according to Wikipedia:

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 can be upgraded to Windows 7 with an in-place upgrade if the processor architecture, comparable edition, and language version are the same.[3][1][14] Windows XP can only be upgraded to Windows 7 via a clean install.[3][1][15][16] However, in some countries, Microsoft has recommended a clean install regardless of whether going from XP or Vista, with reasoning which has not been made clear.[17]

No difference, you probably only need to insert the XP disc once for verification that you already own a previous version.

MSDN:AA and student versions are regulated by Microsoft in coorporation with the educations, so that is probably a no-go for you unfortunately. That leaves only to the common expensive versions. If upgrade isn't acceptable for you, the you can look into only two options: Full and OEM.

OEM is possible, but I earlier said here that it is technically not allowed. That leaves you the only 200$ full versions to be strictly legal. Although, OEM is possible, but with the remarks of LA^^ and it depends a bit on how formal you read the OEM rules.

tigerdirect.com has specials for win7 64 bundled with 1 tb hard drive for around $150 ..full retail version

the specials pop up every so often so you would have to watch them for a few days to catch the sale.

I got mine that way back around xmas time and I have seen it come up several times since then.

Chances are that if you call them and get a sales rep on the phone he will make a deal for you.

They are a good company and stand behind everything even mfg rebates.

There are several partition program .. partition magic for one .. see this >

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348

You could setup a dual boot system so you can boot to either OS... I think you will want separate drives for that.

Bottom line, I think you will not care about xp after you start using win 7.

Here is one of the bundle deals being offered at this time

Its not whether I will care or not. Im the child. my father cotrols it all. And my motherboard is really old, dunno if it supports 2 harddrives. my motherboard is an ASUS P5QPL-AM

But the partitioning programs - they just let me skip that step and just divide my HD through the program, reboot, then im good to go after installing OS?
