I'd definitely buy a drive at least 500GB.

 

But if you can't do that:

1. run through your installed programs ("add/remove programs", or "uninstall a program" in Win7), and uninstall any junk you don't use regularly. These can take up a lot of room.

 

2. Empty your Recycle Bin more.. It still takes up almost just as much room in recycle bin as it does elsewhere on your computer. It's only there incase you f*ck up and delete the wrong thing.. Away from that, you should always empty your trash.

 

3. install something like CCleaner (google it), and run a full sweep of your harddrive, clearing useless files.

 

4. Go through your downloads, delete all installation files etc that you don't need any more.
