everything seems to work, I can't understand the problem, it doesn't happen immediately, it lets me play now, I'll check when it kicks me out

Posted

I changed com_hunkmegs from 1024 to 512, and I no longer get these errors. Does anyone know the maximum value that can be applied without problems?

Posted

I know Legacy doesn’t like being ran through OneDrive so I suspect that may be part of your issue here..

Posted (edited)

Actually, I installed it in the original directory without changing anything

C:Program Files (x86)ETLegacy

I don't know why it creates a profile directory inside OneDrive and I don't know how to prevent it, and anyway I changed com_hunkmegs from 1024 to 512 and it no longer gives me errors, so I deduce that the problem was COM_HUNKMEGS 1024

I am currently inside Jay1 and it doesn't give me any problems.

will from other posts i seen that the max  com_hunkMegs   128  it's ET i don't think you need more than that

it's what i have my cfg set to i had some of the best work on it  so i know it's right and it's has not been that long since it was updated

I don't think that's the problem, because I disabled OneDrive to avoid upload issues while playing ET.

The only processes I have running while I play are the Bluetooth headset audio and ETLegacy

I disabled OneDrive simply because I noticed a sudden increase in ping, and while checking Task Manager while playing ET, I noticed that OneDrive was using the network to update files in real time, so I disabled it from Windows 11 startup, and I no longer have this problem.

Instead, I, after doing a lot of tests, have noticed that at 128 my bullets come out slowly compared to other opponents I face head-on. Changing to com_hunkmegs 1024, the PC is amazing; when jay1 is completely full, they go down like bowling pins in a game, while at 128 and 192, the reaction time for how many seconds it takes for the rifle's clip to empty against an opponent with a high-performance PC is noticeable. Have you ever done these tests? Because when you encounter someone who shoots well and you shoot first, even if you shoot them from behind, they never die; they turn around, pim pim pim, and you're dead. It's frustrating.

Posted

think about it, I've been playing since Quake3 Arena was born, and I can guarantee you that the default com_hunkmegs is quite restrictiveI'll give you a simple exampleit's just my point of viewif there are many people on the server, many with PCs worth thousands of euros and fantastic connections, and you have a lousy PC and an indescribable connection with a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot from a pitiful phone, but you have the best settings because you're a perfectionist, then you can compete, otherwise you won't make the most of your configurator skills and you're a loser from the start, useless to play, you'll always be dead, or you can spend your life in ET hidden in camper mode, that's not for me, I am a duelist

I have a very interesting question to ask you. At this moment, I am playing ET: Legacy connected to the Wi-Fi hotspot of my smartphone, which is 4G, not 5G. Even if my connection supports 5G, it is limited to 4G. That said, the question is this: My smartphone does not support USB tethering, internet sharing via USB tethering, so I am forced to use the Wi-Fi hotspot. When playing ET: Legacy, if I had a smartphone that supports USB tethering, would it be better than the Wi-Fi hotspot connection? This is an excellent question! The short answer is yes, USB tethering is generally better than a Wi-Fi hotspot for online gaming like ET: Legacy. Here’s an analysis of the main reasons and key differences:1. Advantages of USB Tethering 🚀USB tethering offers several advantages over a Wi-Fi hotspot, which are crucial for a smooth gaming experience:Latency (Ping) 📉USB tethering tends to have lower and more stable latency (ping). The USB cable provides a dedicated and protected data path.Potential Speed Although the maximum speed is always limited by your 4G connection (or 5G, if available), the USB connection can theoretically support higher data transfer speeds and, above all, manage throughput more efficiently than a Wi-Fi hotspot, reducing the possibility of lag due to local congestion.2. Wi-Fi Hotspot Limitations 🚧The Wi-Fi hotspot introduces issues that worsen the gaming experience:Additional Latency: The process of transmitting and receiving data via Wi-Fi radio waves adds a small delay (latency) compared to a cable.Interference: The Wi-Fi band (usually 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) can experience interference from other devices (other routers, microwaves, Bluetooth), causing ping fluctuations.CPU/Battery Load: The smartphone must dedicate resources and battery to create and maintain the Wi-Fi hotspot, which sometimes can ConclusionIf I could choose, USB tethering would be by far the preferred solution for playing ET: Legacy with a 4G mobile connection, thanks to its superior stability and reduced latency, which are the most critical factors for a responsive online gaming experience. The limitation of your network to 4G is the main bottleneck for maximum speed, but the connection method (USB vs. Wi-Fi) is what determines the quality and stability of data transfer between the smartphone and the PC.

ET: Legacy Forum Post: USB Tethering Connection Analysis

This post documents the troubleshooting process to establish a stable USB Tethering connection from a Samsung J3 2017 phone (running Android) to a Windows 11 notebook, and an analysis of the connection quality for online gaming, specifically targeting the US ET: Legacy server.

1. Initial Connection Troubleshooting

Initial Problem: The "USB Tethering" option on the Samsung J3 2017 was disabled (grayed out), and the PC only detected the phone for charging.

Resolution:

Drivers: The official Samsung USB drivers were installed on the Windows 11 PC.

APN Configuration: Tethering was successfully enabled by modifying the phone’s APN (Access Point Name) settings to include the dun (Dial-Up Networking) parameter.

Windows Status: After activation, the PC displayed a misleading "No Internet Access" warning, even though the connection was fully functional. This was confirmed to be a local Windows diagnostic (NCSI) issue, not a connection problem.

2. Connection Quality & Ping Test Results

The goal was to confirm if the wired USB connection is superior to the Wi-Fi Hotspot for gaming stability.

Target Server: US ET: Legacy Server (135.148.137.185)

Ping Test Statistics (Via USB Tethering):

Average Ping: 166 ms

Packet Loss: 0% (Excellent)

Jitter (Min/Max): Min 134 ms / Max 188 ms (Moderate)

Analysis:

Stability: The 0% Packet Loss is the key benefit of USB Tethering, guaranteeing a highly reliable connection without the random disconnects or data loss associated with domestic Wi-Fi interference.

Latency Limit: The 166 ms average ping is a consequence of physical intercontinental distance (Italy ↔ New York). The USB connection maximizes stability but cannot reduce this geographical latency below its physical limit (approx. 110–130 ms minimum).

3. Dealing with In-Game Congestion (Lag Spikes)

Observed Problem: During peak hours or long gaming sessions, the connection quality occasionally degrades (lagometer turns red/yellow, stutters, etc.). This issue is confirmed to be mobile carrier congestion (traffic on the cell tower) and not a flaw in the USB cable connection.

Quick Fix Strategy: The user found that the most effective temporary fix is to toggle Airplane Mode on the phone.

Why This Works: Toggling Airplane Mode forces the phone to disconnect, release its current IP address, and reconnect, obtaining a new IP address and potentially a less congested network route toward the internet backbone and the US server.

Conclusion: USB Tethering provides the most stable and reliable connection possible from this setup. The quick fix of toggling Airplane Mode serves as an effective way to reset the network route and overcome temporary congestion spikes caused by the mobile provider.
