  1. One person has been killed and another injured after a light aircraft crashed onto a railroad track in Hicksville, Long Island, on Sunday morning. A small fire was reported at the scene of the incident. The plane crashed onto the tracks of South Oyster Road, according to Nassau County police, as cited by NBC New York. The Hawker Beechcraft BE35 light aircraft crashed at 07:48 ET (11:18 GMT). The plane had taken off from Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach and was heading towards Morristown in New Jersey, Nassau County Police Department spokesman Gary Shapiro said. However, the pilot had radioed to say that the aircraft was experiencing altitude difficulties before the crash took place. A woman who works in the area said one of her co-workers heard the plane coming down, ran outside and pulled at least one person out of the plane. "My co-worker saw the plane upside down and said that plane's going down. He told me to call 911 and then I saw him pulling somebody out of the plane and putting them on the ground," said eyewitness Luz Perez, according to ABC New York. She said the person told a co-worker that there was one other person still in the plane. One passenger died at the scene and the second passenger, a 54-year-old man, was taken to the hospital. The severity of his injuries are unknown, CBS New York reported. s: http://www.rt.com/
  2. 3 dead as military jet crashes near intl airport in S. Spain A military Airbus A400M cargo plane has crashed in Seville in southern Spain. According to media reports, the jet was carrying seven people when it crashed into an irrigation canal in agricultural land near an international airport. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax9ME92L_J4 Spain's Defense Ministry has confirmed the crash, but was unable to give more information on whether there were fatalities. There were "eight to 10" people on board, Spanish PM Manuel Rajoy told EL Pais newspaper, adding that they were Spanish citizens and airbus employees. “We express our deepest sympathy,” he said. “They were our fellow countrymen." According to Spanish emergency services, there were seven people aboard the crashed plane. Three of them have been killed, two injured and two more are missing. The vehicle crashed only 1.6km north of international San Pablo Airport, emergency services said. Though the crash occurred outside the perimeter of the airport, the facility is not operational, El Pais reported. Some flights are being diverted to the cities of Malaga and Jerez. The aircraft was on a test flight, local TV station ABC de Sevilla said, adding that the crew contacted air traffic controllers about a technical failure after takeoff. Numerous images on social media showed firefighters spraying the smoldering wreckage of the jet in a field. The vehicle hadn’t yet been delivered to the Spanish military and was undergoing trials, El Pais reported. Twitter users claimed that the jet crashed on or near a local Coca Cola factory, but this information hasn’t been officially confirmed. Later pictures on social media showed smoking plane wreckage in a field. The Airbus A400M Atlas is a tactical airlifter that can perform various missions, including electronic surveillance and aerial refueling. It is primarily used by the French and Turkish air forces. The A400M's maiden flight took place in December 2009 from Seville, Spain. Germany, Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the UK and Turkey are the jet’s primary operators. Source: http://rt.com/news
  3. American Airlines says it is still investigating the cause of the glitch The glitch caused iPad software - used by the planes' pilots and co-pilots for viewing flight plans - to stop working. The firm's cockpits went "paperless" in 2013 to save its staff having to lug heavy paperwork on board. AA estimated the move would save it more than $1.2m (£793,600) in fuel every year. The company said that it had now found a fix for the problem. "We experienced technical issues with an application installed on some pilot iPads," said a spokesman. "This issue was with the third-party application, not the iPad, and caused some departure delays last night and this morning. "Our pilots have been able to address the issue by downloading the application again at the gate prior to take-off and, as a back-up, are able to rely on paper charts they can obtain at the airport. "We apologise for the inconvenience to our customers." American Airlines pilots use an app called FliteDeck, which is made by the Boeing subsidiary Jeppesen. A spokesman for the firm provided further detail. American Airlines said its pilots often carried more than 35lb (16kg) of paperwork "The issue was caused by a duplicate chart for Reagan National Airport in American's chart database," said Mike Pound. "The app could not reconcile the duplicate, causing it to shut down. "We were able to remedy the situation quickly, and instruct pilots to uninstall and reinstall the app. "Until the chart database is updated, AA pilots flying to or from National will use PDF [portable document format] images of the chart, outside of the app." Electronic flight bags Serge Gojkovich, chief executive of car parking app-maker Curbstand, was among the passengers affected. He tweeted that his San Francisco-to-Los Angeles flight only got airborne on Tuesday after its pilots told passengers they had printed off the maps they needed. Mr Gojkovich suggested that the pilots of his flight printed out the materials they needed American Airlines is not the only carrier whose pilots and cabin crew have switched from using physical charts and paper manuals to tablets. United Airlines was also an early adopter of iPads, while Delta has opted for Microsoft's Surface tablets instead. British Airways and Ryanair are among others still in the process of shifting to so-called Electronic Flight Bag-based systems. In addition to saving on fuel costs, it is also suggested that such kit reduces flight preparation time, reduces the likelihood of injuries and helps staff by offering real-time updates. 4. The two sets of wings An-2 generate much lift, allowing the takeoff in a very short distance. In early April, North Korea revealed a new plan camouflage for some of its most important military aircraft: the Soviet Antonov An-2 biplane. But in 2015 these aircraft are more like something out of a movie Indiana Jones of the first military line of a country border alert. However, this archaic-looking Soviet model, which first flew in 1947, after World War II, has unique abilities. Perhaps that is why thousands of these aircraft were manufactured and exported worldwide, and now, after decades of production, still in operation. In addition to its remarkably short takeoff and landing, the An-2 has a capacity that seems impossible can plan like a helicopter and even fly backwards. Tailored The AN-2 was designed to meet the needs of the Soviet Ministry of Forests, both for spraying crops to transport. Its designer, Oleg Antonov, created a large biplane, single engine, with an enclosed cab that could carry 12 passengers or a ton of merchandise. As the AN-2 would have to operate from rough terrain, amid sparsely populated wilderness, was designed in a simple and robust way, so he could take off and land in very small spaces. So they created a lot easier to maintain aircraft helicopters, which are mechanically more complex. More than 19,000 were built in the Soviet Union and later in Poland, until 1991, and thousands more in China under license. Uncomfortable and noisy, but unique "The reason why the An-2 is still used in aviation is because there really is no other aircraft like him," says the writer on aviation Bernie Leighton, who traveled in An-2 in Belarus. This archaic-looking Soviet model, which first flew in 1947, has unique abilities. And the secret of going backwards? The two sets of wings An-2 generate much lift, allowing the takeoff in a very short distance. If you have a wind strong enough, say 15 or 20 knots, you can plan like a helicopter Bill Leary, manager of the British club UK flight An-2 In fact the minimum airspeed of this biplane is remarkably low: a pilot can fly with full control only 40 km / h. By comparison, the engine of a Cessna means can not fly within 80 km / h. So the An-2 are particularly popular in schools of paragliding and skydiving. This capability also means that this plane can glide like a helicopter, a trick they love to do the pilots of the An-2 during the air show. To achieve this, the pilot flies into a headwind, and if the current is strong enough, this maneuver can cause the plane to fly back slowly, while the pilot remains in control. Source:BBC News
