Police have surrounded a suspected terrorist wearing a “long coat and wires” in Brussels, local media report. It comes as Belgium prepares for National Day, which is celebrated on July 21.

"A person wearing a long coat, with wires coming out, is considered the suspect," Brussels police spokesperson Ilse de Keere said, as quoted by Le Soir media outlet.

A bomb squad is at the scene, and shops in the vicinity have been evacuated.
Several streets are currently blocked.

Police say the suspect is "under control," but has not yet been detained.

Photos from the spot show a man kneeling with his hands up, surrounded at gunpoint by security services.

A TENSE armed stand-off over a suspected jihadi bomb plot was ended – after the suspect turned out to be a student doing research for a university assignment.

Brussels police and bomb squads raced to the scene after reports of a “suspicious” man wandering through the city wearing a “a long coat with protruding wires”.

Dramatic images showed the suspect kneeling on the ground with his hands behind his head as two police train their pistols at him in the city centre.

But local media has reported the young student was in fact collecting data for a uni project on nuclear radiation in the Belgian capital.
