Next year marks Star Trek’s 50th anniversary and in addition to celebrating the occasion with the highly anticipated Star Trek Beyond, we’ll also be getting a new TV series. Yes, you read that correctly.

The exciting news comes courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, who report that producer Alex Kurtzman – who co-wrote and produced the two most recent Star Trek movies – is now looking for a writer and will be overseeing the new show along with Heather Kadin, who has worked with Kurtzman on TV projects including Sleepy Hollow, Limitless and Scorpion.

A press release that followed from CBS revealed that the new Star Trek TV show will launch in January 2017 on CBS All Access before new episodes debut on its digital and VOD platform. Details as to what timeline the show will take place in are scarce, but according to CBS the new series is not related to summer 2016’s Star Trek Beyond and it will "introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966." We’ll be bringing you more on this story at warp speed as it develops.
