Legendary Pictures, producers of the forthcoming King Kong reboot Skull Island, is in the process of moving their property from distributors Universal to Warner, who distributed Legendary's 2014 blockbuster Godzilla.

Deadline have reported that the deal is being made to bring both properties under the same roof, clearly signalling that a big screen King Kong/Godzilla face-off is being considered. Universal have no existing financial stake in Skull Island, and Deadline's sources state that the deal is to happen quickly.

Skull Island is scheduled for a March 2017 release, and stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, and John C. Reilly. Last month, it was announced that Jurassic World writer Derek Connolly is working on the script, which focuses upon a group of explorers who embark for an adventure on a mysterious tropical isle. The title obviously suggests that the legendary giant ape will make an appearance, along with a host of other monsters.

Gareth Edward's Godzilla was released in May 2014, and has made $529 million worldwide, with a sequel due in 2018. Although any subsequent monster showdown would be first time the pair have met in an American movie, they did previously feature in the the 1962 Japanese classic King Kong vs Godzilla
