It was revealed yesterday by Xbox Support that effective as of December 1, Xbox Music would no longer be free on Windows 8 or the web.

Currently, the service exists on Windows 8 platforms and the web via ad support. On December 1, though, users will have to pay $9.99 a month for what is being called an Xbox Music Pass.

There will be a 30-day trial period offered with this change in the service, which is similar to the 15-song trial Xbox 360 and Xbox One users get before being asked to subscribe. It seems that Microsoft is simply trying to consolidate their plans across platforms, but the only explanation they gave is “We are focusing Xbox Music to deliver the ultimate music purchase and subscription service experience for our customers,” on the Xbox Support page.

The change in policy will not affect music that customers have already purchased and all playlists, radio stations, and collections will remain intact, but will be unreachable without the Xbox Music Pass.

Xbox Music originally launched in October 2012 alongside Windows 8.
