i'd say that's 'strike', using a bowling term!

 

nicely done. perhaps leave it natural and maybe carve or burn =F|A= onto it. as you said brier or cherry wood would look nice at they are hard woods and easier to work with. g/j!

I decided to keep it natural, and I used a beeswax based wax/protectant. I also decided to turn the wood cover so that the nice grain shows on boths sides, instead of the top and bottom.
