sincity Posted February 3, 2014 Share Posted February 3, 2014 Google's inexpensive way of streaming Internet media through the Chromecast to televisions may well see a new explosion of content partners now that the search company is unlocking the crucial software development kit. The Google Cast Software Development Kit (SDK) is available now to any software developer who wants to stream their apps or websites to the Chromecast. Now that the software is open to all developers, we could see an explosion of compatible movies, TV show, and music apps thanks to the way the TV dongle works. Unlike a Roku 3 or Apple TV, the Chromecast streams content directly from the user's mobile device or computer. This means developers don't have to develop specific apps tuned to the dongle and can instead simply update their apps on tablets and smartphones, as well as websites to work with the SDK. A torrent of entertainment The Chromecast originally came to market with support for only streaming media bought on the Google Play Store and YouTube videos. As it stands now, 14 additional parties have joined the stream fest including Vevo, HBO, Pandora, and Netflix. But soon that number could increase exponentially with programmers fleeing Apple TV's gated community. Google, however, will run into more competition against Roku, which has lined up a virtual network of over 1,000 channels. We've got our fingers crossed that the Chromecast really works out for Google and TV, but in the meantime we'll keep track of all the new apps and websites you can watch.
