Ol Smoke Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 This thread is for all my problems with WIndows7 and COD4 playability. The forum admin will move all my previous questions into here. Thanks JoeDIrt, speed, and all the other admins for helping me in my hour of need. Quote
Ol Smoke Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 Okay here we go again. After all the other posts, I began to play with the sound as being my problem. I still think it is. And I think the culprit is the headset. That is really the only thing that could be doing this hesitation. There are times when the game plays great, and then there are times that whenever a bomb or nade go off by me, the screen stops for about a 1/2 second or so. But then I started noticing that when the computer puts up a large print notice at the top of the screen, the game stops, then goes. Also, I noticed that whenever I go into a building, or room, it does it. But, once I am in there for a bit, it plays alright. Now, this morning I was noticing that it was awful glitch and so I went to spectator. Even in spec, it was happening. No matter which person I was watching. When something happened on the screen, it would pause. I have the graphics as low as it will go, the NVidia panel is set to performance settings. The only audio I have working is the headset. It is set to mono-11Khz. EQ is off. I have removed the original installation of COD4 from the (X86) directory and reinstalled it into C:\Activision\....; with no change in behavior. I have run it as XP Service Pack 3 and that did not help. I thought it might be the other 4GB of RAM I put in, so I removed it, that didn't help. I bought a new video card, that didn't help, sort of. The really bad glitching went away because of the 32bit problem of the old card, but the other stuff was still there. When I removed the 3D stuff from the NVidia installation, the glitching got a lot better, and I thought it had gone away. But it didn't. The FPS on the new card was only 48-66fps. Then I removed all the 3D and other stuff from the NVidia install, and that helped a lot. Now the FPS is up around 125fps. The game actually plays smoothly except for this pausing it does. I was looking at my motherboard layout and noticed that there is an AC97 plug on the MB for the front panel. I was using the HD plug so it controlled both the front and the rear inputs and outputs. I am going to try that today and plug in my old speakers. I will post on here what happens. I have searched the internet for problems of this nature and have contacted Tom's Hardware Page to see if they have any answers. I did forget to mention this one thing that just came to me. After this last installation, I stopped at each version patch and played the single player game. The glitching affected SP also. I found that from 1.2v to 1.6v there wasn't any glitching. I even went to a 1.6v COD4 server and played about 10 minutes on there without a glitch. Then I installed 1.7v and that is when the glitching started again. So that is where I am at. I don't really expect any smoking gun out of this thread, but maybe there is someone out there that has something like this or another problem in COD4 that could be caused by the same thing. I appreciate any help offered. Quote
Ol Smoke Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 Okay. I redid the sound card install and hooked up my speakers. IT WORKS!! I played 2 whole games and not a stall at anytime. Quote
Ol Smoke Posted December 5, 2013 Author Posted December 5, 2013 I started to play COD4 this morning and the glitch is back. The only thing that changed since yesterday was that I downloaded and installed the xfire program. So, I went in to my PC and removed xfire. Then cleaned the registry of it. Restarted the game and it played smoothly again. As I think back over all these problems I wonder if xfire was the culprit all along. I did install the new version both times. So maybe there are other problems with this new Xfire that we aren't aware of. Quote
Ol Smoke Posted December 5, 2013 Author Posted December 5, 2013 Well that didn't work. Now the game is all glitched up again. I cannot figure out why I am the only one with this problem. Quote
Jacker Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 now that i read ur postings, i have to say, that some of these points actually happen/ed to me. 1. glitching when entering buildings - from time to time, maybe once in a week 2. freezing screen for about 1/2 - 3 seconds - almost every day, i always thought it might be due to smoke grenades 3. xfire not working (alt+x/c) 10 times a day! only way to see chats is to tab out of the game... 4. xfire causing problems in cod4 - not sure of it. possibly the problems wont appear when not turning it on? i'll take a look at that! i play the game with "stable" 60fps. only time they drop down to about 30 is when a smoke grenade just explodes. after a second they're back up at 60. never minded getting it up to 120 or more. but thats just cuz i like it in HD by the way - can anyone tell me, why xfire only shows 60fps, even when the game says 90 or higher? and can anyone explain, what is the exact advantage of 120 fps - since my screen can do only 60Hz? and my eye wont see more than like 30? Ol Smoke Posted January 7, 2014 Author Posted January 7, 2014 I have several other threads on here about this problem and the latest is about how I reinstalled WIN7 and COD4. The game actually plays great on the new install. I think that the problem was in a glitched patch I did to COD4 to get it to version 1.4. On the new install I put in 1.2v and then went right to 1.6v which contains all the other patches. Then I took it to 1.7v and it works great. You should the thread about what xfire did to me this time. That is weird. Quote
Jacker Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 yeah, i also did all the patches after another... maybe i'll reinstall it again? Quote
