A father and son built a secret underground cannabis cave 12ft beneath their back garden – and hid the entrance under a paving stone.

David Mundy, 54, spent hours digging out the den at the rear of his property on Barr Hill Avenue, Pendlebury, aided by son Anthony, 29.

The pair were each sentenced at Manchester Crown Court to 15 week suspended jail sentences for production of a class B drug.

They were also ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work.

Now David Mundy has been ordered to pay back more than £13,000 he made from selling the drugs.

A confiscation hearing was told that officers raided the family home in October 2011 after a tip-off - and discovered the underground entrance beneath the paving flag.

To their amazement, they found concealed ladders leading down to the underground farm, running under the surface of the hillside on the East Lancashire Road.

The cavern contained 17 plants worth more than £8,000.

 

 

The confiscation hearing was held yesterday (MON) under the Proceeds of Crime Act at Manchester Crown Court.

It was found that Mundy had made £13,480 from his secret drug business.

If he fails to repay the cash within six months he will be sent down for a year - and still owe the money.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Riddick, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "Mundy went to considerable lengths - quite literally - to keep his cannabis farm hidden.

"What we discovered was an underground drugs den housed within a storage unit, and must have taken him many hours to build, hours that should have been spent earning his money legitimately like the rest of us do.

"Thanks to Proceeds of Crime Act legislation, we are now able to ensure that people like Mundy cannot profit from their criminal

endeavours.

"GMP employs specialist financial investigations who painstakingly trawl through offender's records to find evidence of a lifestyle

funded by criminality, and we will claw that money back.

"The message is clear: if you think you can bury your criminality underground, you are burying your head in the sand because we will find you and we will do everything we can to take away not only your

liberty but also your illegally accumulated wealth."

It isn't the first time villains have dug tunnels to commit crime.

In January 2012, a gang spent six months digging an underground route from a secluded railway embankment to the ATM beside Blockbuster in Fallowfield.

They then drilled up through 15 inches of concrete before swiping several thousand pounds from the machine - and escaping back down the tunnel.

I'm sorry but I disagree. daily smoking is harmful but not in sufficient quantities. it is less harmful than cigarettes. it seems to me that if it was legal people would have a different opinion on this subject ... that is my opinion.

I used to smoke weed in my teens/early 20's, but don't anymore. When treated with the same care as alcohol, I see no harm in its use. No driving, machinery, etc....

 

I think marijuana laws are a little strict to be honest, and this is from a guy that doesn't even smoke it. Alcohol is actually more dangerous, and one of, if not the biggest contributor to domestic violence, which I have seen first hand.

 

When I would smoke weed, I would just want to hang out with friends, talk, laugh, and eat some good food

 

I hope one day its legalized everywhere for those who choose to use it responsibly.

I really don't want to open another debate on drugs, just want to specify that I wouldn't be against the legalization of this kind of drug if everyone was responsible, after all, it's not my health since I don't/won't consume drugs (even if I think that the government should care about its population's health). But it's not the case, and it will probably never be, we see it every day with cigarette and alcohol and even if cannabis isn't that harmful, it's still a drug and you guys don't really seem to know the definition of this word, nor the consequences incurred by consuming it which can't be neglected, with all my respect. From what I know, the only pseudo-harmless substance considered as drug would be caffeine, but I'm not sure about that.

as long you don't endanger other people (driving,...) it should be allowed, we don't need our hands hold by the government (although a country should take care of their citizens => It's a hard balance to nail I know). So in public you can put restrictions...

And yeah, I didn't mean drug as medicament (but I think you all understood it), and I know that cannabis has curative properties, still not sure it's a good idea to legalize it, even only in the hospitals
