PiaNist Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Hi guys! I'll be buying a new laptop & the seller asks me if I want Windows 8 installed or Windows 7 Home Premium? I've read some negative feedbacks about Windows 8 regarding it being still unstable and not really good for gaming. I appreciate your feedbacks Quote
wussy Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 i would say Windows 7 ( personal ) because i dont like windows 8 ) if i could i would go back to Windows Vista because it runs smooth,.... Quote
Jefke Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 (edited) Well, like I said a couple of times in different topics, windows 8 is perfectly usable. It runs really smooth, a lot smoother than windows 7 (this is own experience on my laptop, been using it a couple of months now. SInce developer preview ) BUT: You either have to adjust to the fullscreen menu (which I can't adjust too) or have to 'fix' that part yourself with start8 (brings the startbutton back, cost 5dollar => classicshell does the same for free, but is harder to setup). I'm using that fix and I never see that fullscreen menu ^^ Besides that there are a couple of other things that personally : - If you put bordercolor to black (which I always do), the title becomes unreadable... - Lack of adjusting the inactive window color (now it always light gray) - Borders is stupidly thick (fixed with this little non-install program) Like you can see, the only real problems I have with win8 are some of the UI design decisions. Which are for the most part fixable (or will be fixable in the near future). I really love it for how smooth it runs and the fact the driver support seems to improved even more (and the new task manager ^^). In the end: programs won't run faster on win8 than on win7, but win8 itself (boot time and stuff) runs faster than win7. Is it worth the switc: maybe if you can live (or fix) the new UI. For gaming it doesn't matter, performance is about the same (that being said, I only got w:et on my laptop. I don't game on laptops ) Personally, with above fixes I would recommend win8 though. Without, go for win7. i would say Windows 7 ( personal ) because i dont like windows 8 ) if i could i would go back to Windows Vista because it runs smooth,.... Da f***, vista and smooth. That OS was a mess . Windows 7 is basicly the fixed version of vista Edited December 17, 2012 by DrJoske 2 Quote

Windows 7 is basicly the fixed version of vista my laptop runs windows 7 and i use it for school, movies, music,....( tryed playing games on it, then i would say Windows Vista is better ) i play games on this computer, windows vista, everything runs very smooth, opens internet in a second, ET runs without lagg,.... so im not having problems with Windows Vista 1 Quote
PiaNist Posted December 17, 2012 Author Posted December 17, 2012 Windows 8 UI, that I don't like. it's suitable for touchscreens, Lenovo Y480 isn't a touchscreen. Quote

Good for you that it runs decently, but win7 > Vista. Opening internet and gaming isn't the problem with vista, UAC and drivers were (can't say if it's still a mess, haven't used it in years ). All my pcs running win7 now, even the once that came with vista (2 laptops). Good that I got all my OS for free Windows 8 UI, that I don't like. it's suitable for touchscreens, Lenovo Y480 isn't a touchscreen. The reason, I gave the solution for that. I also really don't like it Edited December 17, 2012 by DrJoske Quote

wussy Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Well, had/have both running smooth on win7. So, I going to call it bad luck from your part lol im fine with Windows Vista im thinking about plugging in my oldest computer with windows 98 Quote
AznRenz274 Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 ehh.im really sketchy on both.but personally i prefer windows 7 overall because i like the graphics much better.windows 7 is your best bet Quote
RoFoR Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 i think windows 7 is better, it have been more time at market so its more proved than windows 8 Quote
rolf Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 If you want to run old software, go for Windows 7. Perfectly reliable. If you are not afraid for changes, get Windows 8. It's just better. It always / obviously has disadvantages, but the real disadvantage for a number of people is the full screen start menu. Trust me, either that'll work just fine or DrJoske has a few apps which will solve it Quote
ajnl Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 (edited) I loved the layout of windows 8. i know people didn't like it, but even without a touch screen it is great IMO. I had problems with gaming and drivers. After installing the windows 8 drivers for my hardware and also installing my games, the games would crash and at a couple times windows 8 wouldn't even start up. Also I found that windows 7 runs smoother, but that could just be because of the problems I had with the drivers. That is just my experience, I'll try it again later because I rlly do like the layout. Edited December 18, 2012 by ajnl Quote
