If you've ever asked this question, what the f*** has nasa done for me, well there is a website for that! Even if you think traveling in space is useless, there are a lot of technologies that have come from NASA that came from their research into satellites and spacecraft.

WTF Nasa

- Applied Hubble space telescope image process technique to detect breast cancer

- Testing for breast cancer is now LESS painful, expensive, and scarring

- Adjustable fire detectors to prevent false alarms

- Turned traditional food, cosmetics, & pharmaceutical safety inspections into scientific, prevention-based systems

- Ear thermometer

- Made the UV coating for your sunglasses

- Simplified kidney dialysis

- Provide protection for race car drivers & nuclear reactor technicians

- Developed the upturned ends now found on many airplane wings which are saving airlines billions in fuel costs

------

I didn't even realize this was from Nasa. But if you notice aircraft getting their "upturned ends", which are actually called winglets. They improve the wings efficiency by reducing the wing vortex. The wing vortex is created by air circulating around the wing and rolling off the tips. The stronger this vortex the more drag an aircraft's wing has. So because winglets reduce the vortex's strength, it also reduces drag.

------

- Developed technology now used to preserve books in the Library of Congress

- Made your food last longer

- Cooling vest worn by factory workers (and astronauts) in hot temperatures

- Developed and validated all-electric flight control systems now used on nearly all modern aircraft

- Inspired the design for your Speedo bathing suit (not sure if this is a good thing tho! lol)

- NASA radar improves oil spill cleanup effort during BP Deepwater Horizon blowout

- Memory foam

- 'Invisible' braces

- Developing nasal spray to prevent motion sickness

- NASA's satellite series called GOES makes weather forecasting websites (ie weather.com and accu-weather) possible

- Grooves in pavement which led to safer driving & airplane takeoffs

- Created cost-effective, environmentally friendly tent-like roofs

- Developed the most efficient insulator known to man (aerogel), currently used in fridges, cars, and shoe soles.

- Improved forest fire prevention through high altitude infrared sensors

- Developed helicopter rotor that lasted twice as long, reduced noise by 40%, and enhanced high altitude performance

- Developed advanced satellite imagery without the use of expensive thermal imaging

- Played a pivotal role in the emergence of cloud technology

- Developed zero-emission, lithium batteries used in electric powered cars

- Developed high pressure valves that are now used in earthquake prone areas

- Provides innovative video stabilization software that's been used at the Olympics, in law enforcement, and commercially

- Developed material used in hang gliders

- GPS devices rely on NASA satellites & related technology

- Refined the shape of large trucks to reduce aerodynamic drag and improved efficiency

- Created technology for consumer panoramaic photographic stitching software
