Antichrist
I like the power gas powered cars have. I like being familiar with gas engines, and being able to fix them easily myself, saving $. I also like the fact that people car HEAR my truck coming down the road. Less of a chance of kids/animals to run out in front of me. Show me an electric/hybrid that's capable of over 1000 horsepower to the wheels (within a NORMAL HUMANS BUDGET), and I'll consider them. In all honesty, I shouldn't be able to fart louder than my car...
Ol Smoke
We own a Ford Fusion Hybrid. On the freeway we average 38mpg. In town we usually get 33. But the really cool thing is driving on a freeway with the cruise control on. We go to eastern Oregon a lot on hiway 84 and it has a lot of uphills in it. So if I set the cruise to 60mph and we come up to a hill. Instead of flooring the gas pedal like other cars do, the electric motor kicks in to bring the car up to the set speed. I have these gauges that show the gas and electric motor useage, so I can see it do this. Drawbacks to hybrids. Loss of trunk space. An extra 400# of batteries and motor. A lot of people think the hybrids are slow and stuff. This car has a 4 cylinder gas motor and it will flat move out. I drove a section of hiway back from the coast one day, at 70 to 80 mph and I looked at the mpg meter and was still getting 32 mpg. Now that's cool. The one big drawback to battery powered cars is the toxic waste from the batteries. Both in getting rid of them and in the building of them. The biggest toxic spill in Japan during the Tsunami wasn't the atomic power plant, it was the destruction of the plant where all the batteries are built for the cars. That plant sits on a square mile piece of concrete over a foot thick. This is just to keep the toxic chemicals from leaching into the ground. Atomic waste has a half life, but the chemicals used in the production of these batteries is forever. So they are not green friendly like the auto makers want us to believe. Ford is getting rid of the hybrids. They are working on a 3 or 2 cylinder car that will get over 50mpg and still do over 75mph. You will see it soon.
