Saizou Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Recently I attached an old HD back into the PC, everything worked fine and all of the data on it was fine, all 3 partitions worked too. Couple of days later, I noticed that one of partitions suddenly won't work and Windows (XP) display that "disk is not formatted, would you like to format it now" message. Today I noticed that one of the directories on other partitions also won't open with the not formatted message again. Probably it's the HD failing as it's fairly old but I want to try everything before I declare the whole disk dead. I'd like to recover the data but I'm not very optimistic on it. So I was wondering if someone else had the same problem and what was the outcome of it. Quote
Administrators JoeDirt Posted August 2, 2011 Administrators Posted August 2, 2011 Put the hdd in a ziplock bag and place in the freezer for couple of hours, then take it out and let it come to room temp, connect to comp and test. Quote
Saizou Posted August 3, 2011 Author Posted August 3, 2011 I'll put it overnight, but from what I've seen it's a short term solution (2-20 minutes max) before it dies again, which might just be enough. Worth a shot. EDIT: Didn't help, still the same. Tho I've managed to fix that one broken directory with that Windows error-checking tool. Quote
